NEW ZEALAND.-SOUTH ISLAND.-TIMARU HARBOUR Eastern Extension Mole
Position : Lat., 44Β° 24' S.; long., 171Β° 16' E. (approx.).
Details : About 800 ft. of the timber superstructure on the Eastern Extension Mole is being removed. A further section of approximately 50 ft. at the extreme end on which the flashing white light is situated will be left standing.
This removal will reduce the prominence of the Mole and, as it then may not be so readily recognized, masters are advised to exercise caution when visibility is bad.
Authority : Timaru Harbour Board, 2/2/45.

Wheat, Oats, and Barley.-Estimated Yields
Census and Statistics Department,
Wellington, 12th February, 1945.
THE following estimated average yields per acre of wheat, oats, and barley for the season 1944-45 have been compiled from reports furnished by Stock Inspectors of the Department of Agriculture throughout the Dominion, and are now published for general information.
District. Wheat. Oats. Barley.
Bushels per Bushels per Bushels per
Acre. Acre. Acre.
North Island .. 34 42 41
Marlborough .. 38 40 31
Nelson .. 30 35 35
Canterbury .. 36 45 42
Otago .. 42 50 . 41
Southland .. 41 57 43
Average (estimated) for the Dominion .. 37 49 40
The above estimates may be compared with last season's actual average yields, which were : Wheat, 30-83 bushels ; oats, 46-26 bushels ; and barley, 29-49 bushels.
In accordance with the above estimates, the total yield of wheat for the season 1944-45 should be approximately 6,800,000 bushels, as against an ascertained yield of 7,208,485 bushels for the season 1943-44.
The area from which oats were threshed for the five seasons ending with 1943-44 averaged 21 per cent. of the total area under that crop. Assuming that a similar proportion is threshed this year, the total yield of grain would be approximately 2,400,000 bushels, as against a yield of 1,834,310 bushels for the season 1943-44.
On a similar assumption in regard to barley, the total yield of grain would be approximately 1,430,000 bushels, as against 832,783 bushels for the season 1943-44.
