NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR MAY, 1944

General.-Several anticyclonic systems gave May a predominance of quiet days. Except for south-easterly rains affecting the eastern parts of the North Island at its close May was a fairly dry month. In the north there is still some grass growth, but elsewhere this has been severely checked by frost. The country generally is in good order, and stock in satisfactory condition with adequate feed. In some southern districts the area of autumn-sown crops was less than usual.

Rainfall.-Surplus rain fell in the North Island to the south of Tolaga Bay, it being very wet along the coast between Cape Kidnappers and Cape Palliser. Local excesses occurred also over and near Banks Peninsula. Elsewhere rainfall was below normal. It was most deficient in Marlborough and central Nelson, but in addition many places in the King-country, Northern Taranaki, Central Otago, and Southland received less than half the usual rainfall.

Temperature.-Mean temperatures were below normal mainly by one or two degrees Fahrenheit, except west of the Alps where values were closer to normal. Frosts were numerous and often sharp in the south, but no very severe weather was experienced.

Sunshine.-Appreciable excesses of sunshine were experienced in the more northern districts, while over most of the South Island there were moderate deficiencies.

New Plymouth had 202·7 hours and Tauranga 200·2 hours, while Rotorua, with 187·2 hours, had almost a local record for May. Waipoua and Palmerston North also had unusually high values.

Weather Sequence.-At first a depression was near Chathams and an anticyclone over Queensland, the latter systems being over New Zealand on the 5th. Cold south-westerlies, which were giving showers to eastern districts, especially to the neighbourhood of Christchurch, gradually decreased, and fine weather was general by the 4th. North-easterlies with scattered rain prevailed in the north on the 6th. With the movement of a deep depression from the central Tasman to south of Stewart Island on the 8th, north-westerly or westerly winds became strong at times, and western districts experienced showery periods, these easing considerably during the 8th and 9th when, however, West-land had some thunderstorms.

A cool westerly change in Southland on the 10th gave some showers, and a moderate anticyclone moved on to the South Island, while a depression from the west passed near North Cape. The latter gave scattered rain in the Auckland Province, but it became fair generally. Another depression moved across the Auckland Peninsula on the 13th with little rain. A slight disturbance affected Southland, but elsewhere it was fine.

During the 15th and 16th a cold front rapidly crossed the country bringing showery conditions and some snow on the ranges, but it had improved almost generally by the 17th with an anticyclone covering New Zealand. Another anticyclonic centre was located to the south on the 18th, and apart from scattered showers near East Cape it was fine. A cold front followed by a substantial wedge of high pressure arrived on the 21st and it became much colder with showers in most districts and some snow on the ranges, but it soon cleared from the west and numerous frosts occurred.

The anticyclonic system moved away to the north-east on the 26th, when north-easterlies strengthened in the far north. A depression from the north-west and a cold front from the south brought rain to the North Island and to eastern districts of the South Island respectively. The depression was near East Cape on the 28th and 29th and some more heavy falls occurred between there and Hawke's Bay, and rain further extended along the coast at times to Kaikoura. Pressure remained high to the south. On the 30th it improved in the east but deteriorated somewhat west of the Alps. A moderate southerly change advanced with some drizzle and rain in eastern districts, while an active depression crossed the Auckland Province and rain developed from the far north, and on the morning of the 1st it was raining steadily between Opotiki and Hawke's Bay.
