The Fruit and Produce Stores Employees’ Labour Legislation Suspension and Modification Order 1944
IN pursuance of the Labour Legislation Emergency Regulations 1940, the Minister of Labour doth hereby order as follows:

This Order may be cited as the Fruit and Produce Stores Employees’ Labour Legislation Suspension and Modification Order 1944.

This Order applies to female workers employed on work coming within the scope of the New Zealand (except Westland) Fruit and Produce Stores Employees’ award dated the 11th day of November, 1943, and recorded in 43 Book of Awards 594, and to their employers.

The provisions of section 3 of the Factories Amendment Act, 1936, are hereby suspended in respect of the workers referred to in clause 2 hereof, and the provisions of the said award are hereby modified in respect of the employment of such workers to the extent hereinafter provided.

Female workers employed packing and sorting fruit and eggs and receiving and preparing flowers for sale may be employed preparing vegetables, and while so employed shall be paid 3d. per hour extra.

(a) Female workers employed on any class of store work other than those set out in clause 4 hereof shall be paid not less than the following rates of wages:
For the first six months . . . 2 14 6 per week.
For the second six months . . . 3 1 0 per week.
For the third six months . . . 3 14 6 per week.
And thereafter £3 19s. 6d. per week.
(b) No worker who remains in her present employment shall have her wages reduced by reason of the introduction of the scale set out in subclause (a) hereof.
(c) Female workers who are paid less than the rates of wages prescribed for male workers shall not be required to lift or to carry unassisted any package exceeding 50 lb. in weight.
- This Order shall come into effect on the day of the date hereof.

The Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendments.—Fixing the Closing-hours of Fruiterers’ Shops within the Combined District of Nelson
WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded to the Minister of Labour from the occupiers of fruiterers’ shops within the Combined District of Nelson, comprising the City of Nelson and the Town District of Tahunanui, pursuant to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22:
And whereas he is satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said combined district:
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, the Minister of Labour doth hereby direct that on and after the 17th day of April, 1944, all the said shops within the said combined district shall be closed on the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6.30 p.m. during the months of April, May, June, July, August, and September in each year.
The notice dated 12th May, 1942, fixing the closing-hours of fruiterers’ shops in the Combined District of Nelson, and gazetted on the 14th May, 1942, shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.
