Wheat, Oats, and Barley.—Estimated Yields.

THE following estimated average yields per acre of wheat, oats, and barley for the season 1940-41 have been compiled from reports furnished by Stock Inspectors of the Department of Agriculture throughout the Dominion, and are now published for general information.

The above estimates may be compared with last season’s actual average yields, which were: Wheat, 31·10 bushels; oats, 41·83 bushels; and barley, 36·25 bushels.

In accordance with the above estimates, the total yield of wheat for the season 1940-41 should be approximately 8,400,000 bushels, as against an ascertained yield of 8,010,089 bushels for the season 1939-40.

The area from which oats were threshed for the five seasons ending with 1939-40 averaged 21 per cent. of the total area under that crop. Assuming that a similar proportion is threshed this year, the total yield of grain should be approximately 2,810,000 bushels, as against a yield of 2,081,106 bushels for the season 1939-40.

On a similar assumption in regard to barley, the total yield of grain should be approximately 1,020,000 bushels, as against 915,805 bushels for the season 1939-40.

Building Construction Control.—Notice No. 1, 1941.

PURSUANT to the Supply Control Emergency Regulations 1939, and the Building Emergency Regulations 1939, I hereby direct as follows:—

(1) No person shall use screwed steel conduit for the enclosure of electrical cables for internal wiring in any case where an alternative method of enclosure or covering is provided for under the Electrical Wiring Regulations, 1935, but such alternative method of enclosure or covering shall be used.

(2) No person shall use copper sheets for valleys, spoutings, ridges, gutters, downpipes, flashings, or any other roofing purpose, including rain-water heads and other rain-water fittings, except with the precedent consent of the Building Controller.

Building Construction Control.—Notice No. 2, 1941.

PURSUANT to the Supply Control Emergency Regulations 1939, and the Building Emergency Regulations 1939, I hereby direct as follows:—

(1) In any case where an application is made to any local authority for a permit for the erection of any dwellinghouse involving the use of galvanized corrugated iron, the local authority shall not issue a permit therefor without the precedent consent of the Building Controller.

(2) In any case where any person proposes to commence the erection of any dwelling involving the use of galvanized corrugated iron and no permit therefor is required from a local authority, that person shall not commence the work except in accordance with a permit issued by the Building Controller.

Notice to Mariners No. 1 of 1941.

Light to be temporarily transferred.

New Position: On western end of Taranga (Hen Island). Lat., 35° 57·75 S.; long., 174° 42·1 E. (approx.).

Abridged Description: Fl. ev. 10 sec. 357 ft. vis. 15 M. (U.).

Details: On or about the 28th February Maro Tiri Island (Chickens) light will be discontinued and re-exhibited from a small white tower in the above new position at an elevation of 357 ft. The light will be altered to show a flash of 0·2 second every 10 seconds and be visible for 15 miles from 325° through north and east to 176° except where obscured by Sail Rock. The tower on Maro Tiri will be left standing.

NOTE.—The light, after its discontinuance, may not be re-exhibited for a night or so if landing conditions at Taranga Island are unfavourable.
