Register of Engineers.

Office of the Minister of Public Works, Wellington, 8th July, 1940.

IN pursuance of section 13 of the Engineers Registration Act, 1924, a certified copy of the names, qualifications, and addresses entered in the Register of Engineers, as at 31st March, 1940, is published for general information.

Under the heading of “Qualifications” is shown the particular clause of section 6 of the Act under which the applicant has been registered.

Section 6 of the Act is as follows:—

“6. (1) Every person shall, on payment of the prescribed fee, be entitled to be registered under this Act as an engineer who—

“(a) Holds some recognized certificate as hereinafter defined, and who satisfies the Board that he has had not less than three years’ practical experience in engineering; or

“(b) Has attained the age of twenty-five years, and has been engaged during a period of not less than six years before the commencement of this Act in the acquisition of professional knowledge or in the practice of engineering in a manner satisfactory to the Board, and who makes application for registration within twelve months after the commencement of this Act; or

“(c) Passes or has passed an examination or examinations approved by the Board, and who satisfies the Board that he has had not less than three years’ practical experience in engineering.

“(2) For the purposes of this section the term ‘recognized certificate’ means a certificate, diploma, degree, or license granted by some university, college, or other public institution (whether in New Zealand or elsewhere), and which is recognized by the Board as furnishing sufficient evidence of the possession of the requisite knowledge and skill for the efficient practice of the profession of engineering.”

In 1928 an amendment to the Act was passed.

Subsection (1) of section 2 of the amendment reads as follows:—

“2. (1) In addition to the classes of persons entitled to be registered as engineers under the principal Act any person may on payment of the prescribed fee be registered as an engineer who, being registered at the date of the passing of the principal Act as a licensed surveyor under the Surveyors’ Institute and Board of Examiners Act, 1908, satisfies the Board that he had prior to the coming into operation of the principal Act substantial practical experience in engineering as part of his practice or employment, whether on his own account or otherwise howsoever, and who makes application for registration within six months after the passing of this Act.”

Applicants who have qualified for registration under the 1928 amendment are shown accordingly, under the heading of “Qualifications.”
