Situated on the Hackett and Browning Creek Track,
fifteen miles from Hope Post-office and Railway-station,
thirteen miles from Hope School, and seventeen miles from
Brightwater Dairy Factory and Saleyards. Access is from
Hope by eleven miles of good metalled road and four miles
of bridle-track. About 1,020 acres have been felled and
burned but are now in worn-out pasture, fern, and manuka,
the balance of the area being in its natural state. Soil is
from fair to poor resting on slate and serpentine formation.
The area comprises hill country, steep, and broken, with
about 75 acres mineral outcrop. Altitude is from 1,000 ft.
to 3,000 ft. above sea-level. Permanent streams water the
property, which is not an economic unit but should be useful
to an adjoining holder for grazing purposes.
Note.—The attention of intending applicants for this property
is drawn to the fact that the last four miles of the access is by
bridle-track. The Crown does not accept any responsibility
to improve the existing access in any way.

Settlement Land in Otago Land District for Selection on
Renewable Lease.
District Lands and Survey Office,
Dunedin, 21st May, 1940.
NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned section
is open for selection on renewable lease under the
Land Act, 1924, and the Land for Settlements Act, 1925 ;
and applications will be received at the District Lands an
Survey Office, Dunedin, up to 4 o'clock p.m. on Monday,
8th July, 1940.
Applicants should appear personally for examination at the
District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, on Wednes-
day, 10th July, 1940, at 10.30 o'clock a.m., but if any
applicant is unable to attend he may be examined by any
other Land Board or by any Commissioner of Crown Lands.
Applicants are required to produce for inspection when
examined documentary evidence of their financial position,
such as bank pass-books, certificates or letters of credit from
managers of banks, financial institutions, or mercantile firms,
or from private persons or parents undertaking to give
financial assistance. Persons undertaking to assist financially
should state to what extent they are prepared to do so and
supply guarantees of their own financial position.
The ballot will be held immediately upon conclusion of the
examination of applicants, and the successful applicant is
required to pay immediately at conclusion of ballot a deposit
comprising the first half-year's rent, broken-period rent,
lease fee, and deposit in reduction of weighting for improve-
ments.
SCHEDULE.
OTAGO LAND DISTRICT.—SECOND-CLASS SETTLEMENT LAND.
Clutha County.—Arthurton Settlement.
SECTION 28 : Area, 1,307 acres 2 roods 33 perches. Capital
value, £3,740 ; half-yearly rent, £63 10s.
Weighted with £1,540 for improvements, comprising
dwelling, washhouse and hut, hut, stable and barn, cow-byre,
fowlhouse and pig-stye, implement-shed, shearing-shed,
sheep-yards, sheep-dip and concrete drying-pen, plantation,
fencing, grassing, and road formation through property.
This sum is payable in cash, or, after payment of a deposit
of £190, the balance £1,350 to be paid by half-yearly instal-
ments of £47 5s. (principal and interest) over a term of
twenty-five years and a half, interest at 5 per cent. per annum.
This section is situated in the Clutha County three miles
from Waipahi Post-office, School, Railway-station, Dairy
Factory, and Saleyards. Access is by formed and metalled
road. The area is undulating and comprises good safe sheep-
country and on the tussock portion twenty-five head of beef
cows could be carried. The soil is a light loam resting on
clay and rock bottom ; watered by river, creeks, and springs.
Fairly clear of noxious weeds and rabbits. Approximately
500 acres arable, and the balance is in the natural state and
gullies.

STATE FOREST SERVICE NOTICE.
Milling-timber for Sale by Public Tender.
State Forest Service,
Invercargill, 22nd May, 1940.
NOTICE is hereby given that written tenders for the
purchase of the undermentioned milling-timber will
close at the office of the State Forest Service, Invercargill,
at 4 o'clock p.m., on Thursday, the 13th day of June, 1940.
SCHEDULE.
SOUTHLAND FOREST-CONSERVATION REGION.—OTAGO LAND
DISTRICT.
ALL the milling-timber on that piece of land containing
approximately 137 acres (known as Sawmill Area No. 39a),
Blocks X and XI, Rimu Survey District, State Forest No. 37,
about eight miles from Tahakopa Railway-station.
The total estimated quantity of timber in cubic feet is
138,700, or in board feet 836,000, made up as follows:—

Term of license : One year and a half.
Terms of Payment.
A marked cheque for one-fourth of the amount tendered,
plus £1 1s. license fee, must accompany the tender, and the
balance be paid in three equal quarterly instalments, the
first falling due three months after the date of sale.
Terms and Conditions.

All instalment-payments shall be secured by “on
demand” promissory notes made and endorsed to the satis-
faction of the Commissioner of State Forests, and interest at
the rate of 1 per cent. per annum in excess of current bank
overdraft rates will be charged on all notes overdue from
the date of maturity to the date of payment. -
The right to cut and remove the timber will be sold in
accordance with the provisions of the Forests Act, 1921-22,
the regulations in force thereunder, and these conditions. -
The aforementioned quality, quantity, and kind as to
the said timber shall be taken as sufficiently accurate for
the purposes of this sale, and no contract for the purchase
shall be voidable, nor shall the successful purchaser be en-
titled to any abatement in price, by reason of the said timber
being of less quantity, quality, or kind as stated herein or in
any advertisement having reference to the said timber. -
A return giving the number of logs cut of each species
and their contents must be made quarterly by the licensee
on the last days of March, June, September, and December,
respectively, in each year. A return must also be made on the
same dates showing the output of sawn timber of each species.
These returns may be ascertained and verified by inspection
of the books of the mill, or by such other means as the Con-
servator may require, and for this purpose the accounts and
books shall be open to the inspection of the Conservator, a
Forest Ranger, or other duly authorized officer. -
The attention of all tenderers is drawn to the fact that
the local controlling body may require the successful tenderer
to pay any claims or charges which may be made by that
body for the maintenance of the road over which the timber
may be transported, and before a sawmill license is issued a
letter indicating that satisfactory arrangements have been
made in this connection must be produced to the undersigned. -
Intending tenderers are expected to visit the locality
and to satisfy themselves in every particular on all matters
relative to the sale. -
Each tenderer must state the total price that he is pre-
pared to pay for the timber. The highest or any tender is not
necessarily to be accepted, and the timber described is sub-
mitted for sale subject to the final acceptance of the tender
by the Commissioner of State Forests. -
The right is reserved to the Commissioner of State
Forests to withdraw from sale any or all of the said timber
either before or after the closing date for receipt of tenders. -
If no tender is accepted for the timber herein mentioned
it will remain open for application for three months from the
date tenders close. -
Tenders should be on the special form obtainable from
any office of the State Forest Service, and should be enclosed
in envelopes addressed “Conservator of Forests, Invercargill,”
and endorsed “Tender for Timber.”
The conditions, which will be inserted in the license to be
issued to the purchaser, and further particulars may be
obtained on application to the undersigned or to the Director
of Forestry, Wellington.
