IN pursuance of the power vested in me by the Child Welfare Act, 1925, I, Henry Greathead Rex Mason, Minister of Education, do hereby notify that on account of the undermentioned persons having ceased to be members of the Public Service their appointments as Child Welfare Officers made under section 2 of the said Act have been revoked as from the date hereof:

Captain Eustace Rotheram, Royal Navy, lent New Zealand Naval Forces for H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, to date lst November, 1940, and to H.M.S. “Philomel” in command, and as Captain in Charge, Auckland; Superintendent, H.M. Dockyard, Devonport; and Director of Naval Recruiting, vice Bingley, from date of joining.

William MacMillan, Esquire, entered as Temporary Lieutenant, Royal Naval Reserve (New Zealand) (to serve under T. 124 Agreement), to date 24th November, 1940, and appointed to H.M.S. “Muritai” additional, for fast minesweepers. To serve in the acting rank of Lieutenant-Commander.

John Fitzpatrick, Esquire, entered as Temporary Lieutenant, Royal Naval Reserve (New Zealand) (to serve under T. 124 Agreement), to date 14th November, 1940, and appointed to H.M.S. “Muritai” additional, for fast minesweepers.

Ronald Matheson, Esquire, entered as Temporary SubLieutenant, Royal Naval Reserve (New Zealand) (to serve under T. 124 Agreement), to date 15th November, 1940, and appointed to H.M.S. “Muritai” additional, for fast minesweepers.

Lieutenant Ernest Walter Garner, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (New Zealand), promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, with seniority of 10th October, 1940.

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve of the following appointments, promotions, transfers, and retirements of officers of the New Zealand Military Forces:

STAFF.

Major-General Sir Andrew H. Russell, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., N.Z. Temporary Staff, Inspector-General, New Zealand Military Forces, will act as Chief of the General Staff and First Military Member of the Army Board, in addition to his present duties, during the absence from the Dominion of Major-General Sir John E. Duigan, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.O., N.Z. Staff Corps. Dated 10th October, 1940.

N.Z. STAFF CORPS.

Major M. E. Johnson, M.C., is posted to the Retired List, with permission to retain his rank and wear the prescribed uniform. Dated 25th November, 1940.

The notice published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 75, dated 25th July, 1940, relative to Lieutenant P. S. Gillingham, is hereby cancelled and the following substituted:

“Lieutenant P. S. Gillingham, Reserve of Officers, N.Z. Staff Corps, is transferred to the Active List, and is attached to the Staff of the Director of Mobilization, Army Headquarters, Wellington, with the acting rank of Captain. Dated 10th June, 1940.”

N.Z. TEMPORARY STAFF.

Lieutenant F. N. Hornibrook, A.N.Z.I.A., L.R.I.B.A., A.M.I.S.E., Lond., M.R.S.I., Lond., to be Captain. Dated 29th October, 1940.

Captain P. B. Cooke, M.C., K.C., Retired List, to be Captain, is attached to the Adjutant-General’s Branch, Army Headquarters, Wellington, and is granted the acting rank of Major. Dated lst November, 1940.

Lieutenant C. L. Meredith-Kaye to be Captain. Dated 9th November, 1940.

Benjamin Houston, M.C., D.C.M. (late Imperial Forces), to be Lieutenant, and is posted for duty with “A” Company, N.Z. Regular Force. Dated 31st May, 1940.
