Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 6th November, 1940.
COMMUNICATION BETWEEN AIRCRAFT AND SHIPS.
- Mariners are hereby advised that the following procedure recommended by the International Commission for Aerial Navigation for establishing communication between aircraft and ships in circumstances not already envisaged in the International Code of Signals, has been provisionally adopted in New Zealand until further notice:—
(1) An aircraft wishing to attract the attention of a ship when unable to establish communication by radio-electric or daylight signalling apparatus, should fly round the ship.
(2) An aircraft wishing to inform a ship that its assistance is required by either another ship or an aircraft in distress shall adopt the following procedure:—
(i) Fly low round the ship and fire a succession of green Verey lights or make a succession of green flashes by means of the Aldis lamp. These signals will be acknowledged by the ship in one of the following ways:—
By Day:—
(a) By flashing a succession of T's in the Morse code:
(b) By hoisting the answering pennant close up:
(c) By blowing jets of steam through the whistle:
(d) By displaying a white strip in a conspicuous position.
By Night:—
(a) By waving a white light.
(ii) When its signals have been acknowledged, the aircraft will proceed in the requisite direction thereby giving the ship a course to follow.
(iii) Upon reaching the aircraft or ship in distress, the searching aircraft will circle until the rescue ship reaches the position.
(iv) When the master of the rescue ship is satisfied that all possible assistance has been rendered and all survivors have been picked up, he will signal to the aircraft in one of the following ways to indicate that the ship is about to depart:—
By Day:—
(a) By flashing a succession of C's in the Morse code:
(b) By hoisting the answering pennant close up:
(c) By blowing jets of steam through the whistle:
(d) By displaying a white strip in a conspicuous position.
By Night:—
(a) By waving a white light.
(v) This signal will be acknowledged by the aircraft by firing a white Verey light or by flashing the letter R in white by means of the Aldis lamp.
(vi) Until the rescue ship makes the signal given in paragraph 2 (iv) the searching aircraft will continue the search as long as possible, assuming that all survivors have not been picked up and that rescue operations are incomplete.
(vii) Should it be desired to inform the rescue ship that its assistance is no longer required, the aircraft will fly low round the ship and will be rocked laterally until the ship acknowledges in one of the ways specified in paragraph (iv).
-
No aircraft will fly low round ships except when they have a message to pass or some specific duty to perform.
-
Notice to Mariners No. 8 of 1935 is hereby cancelled.
