HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve the following appointment in rank in the New Zealand Naval Forces to date 23rd September, 1939 :—
Mr. Stanley Joseph Frank Hermans, New Zealand Naval Forces being appointed to the rank of Probationary Schoolmaster, to date 23rd September, 1939.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor, Whakatane Borough Council, is published in accordance with the provisions of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1926.

WHAKATANE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
I, BRIAN SWEENEY BARRY, Mayor of the Borough of Whakatane, hereby declare that a poll of ratepayers of the Borough of Whakatane was taken on Wednesday, 13th December, 1939, upon a proposal to borrow the sum of seven thousand five hundred pounds.
The purpose for which the loan is required is the supplying and distributing of electrical energy for the benefit of the electricity supply area comprising the Borough of Whakatane and for such purpose to do all or any of such matters and things which the Council is empowered to do by the Municipal Corporations Act, 1933, and its amendments, and the Public Works Act, 1928, and its amendments, and in particular and without limiting in any way any of the aforesaid powers, to provide, erect, and construct additions and extensions to the present system of electricity distribution and reticulation, to purchase plant, land, easements, and general equipment.
The result of the polling on the above proposal was as follows :—
Votes.
The number of votes cast for the proposal was .. 71
The number of votes cast against the proposal was .. 4
I therefore declare the proposal to be carried.

ONE TREE HILL BOROUGH COUNCIL.
PURSUANT to section 13 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1926, I hereby give notice that at a poll of the ratepayers of the Borough of One Tree Hill, taken on the 19th day of December, 1939, on the proposal of the One Tree Hill Borough Council to borrow the sum of eleven thousand pounds (£11,000), for the purpose of widening the Great South Road, between Campbell and Waiohua Roads, to a total width of 80 ft. :—

The number of votes recorded for the proposal was .. 221
The number of votes recorded against the proposal was 80
I therefore declare that the proposal was carried.
