THE Public Service Commissioner has made the following
appointments in the Public Service:
Stanley Ian Cameron
to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at
Little River, as from the 7th day of March, 1939.
John Reginald Herd
to be Crown Solicitor and Commissioner of Labour for the
purposes of section 9 of the Samoa Act, 1921, Registrar of
Land for the purposes of section 5 of the Samoa Land
Registration Order, 1920, and Official Assignee for the
purposes of section 6 of the Samoa Bankruptcy Order 1922,
as from the 12th day of February, 1939.
Gordon Milne
to be an inspector for the purposes of the Health Act, 1920,
and an officer for the purposes of the Sale of Food and Drugs
Act, 1908, as from the 4th day of January, 1939.

The Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, and its Amendments.—
Prohibiting the Sale within the Borough of Thames of
certain Goods comprised in the Trade of a Grocer.
WHEREAS a petition in writing, signed by a majority
of the occupiers of all the grocers' shops within the
Borough of Thames, has been forwarded to me, desiring that
the sale of certain goods comprised in the trade of a grocer—
namely, tea, cocoa, coffee, sugar, flour, spices, condiments
(other than sauce and pickles), candles, cornflour, cereals,
sardines and other tinned fish, soda, soap (other than toilet
soap), starch, blue, vinegar, baking powder, jam, culinary
essences, jellies, salt, boot and floor polishes, meat pastes
and fish pastes, syrup and treacle, honey, almonds (out of
shell), ground almonds, arrowroot, asparagus (in tins or
preserved), beans (in tins), blancmange (powder), black lead,
borax, cake powders, capers, caustic soda (in tins), cornflakes
and similar lines, curry powders, dyes, egg preservatives,
eggs substitutes, gelatine, gravy preparations, hops, isinglass,
meat extracts, oils (olive, salad, cooking), olives in bottles
or tins, peas (dried or in tins), rennet, soups (in tins, packets,
or bottles), sweet corn in tins, macaroni, coffee essence,
custard powder, vermicelli, cream of tartar, carbonate of
soda, ginger, lemon peel, orange peel, and washing powders—
be prohibited during such time as the said shops are required
to be closed in pursuance of the Shops and Offices Act,
1921-22 :
And whereas I, Patrick Charles Webb, Minister of Labour,
am satisfied that the sale of the said goods is comprised in
the said trade within the said borough, and that the
signatures to such petition represent a majority of the
occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough:
Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 33 of the said
Act, I do hereby direct that on and after the 10th day of
April, 1939, the sale of the said goods within the said
borough shall be and is hereby prohibited as follows:
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after
the hour of 5 p.m., on Fridays after the hour of 9 p.m., and
on Saturdays after the hour of 1 p.m.: Provided that when
Friday is generally observed as a holiday the sale of the
said goods shall not be prohibited on the Thursday immediately preceding such day until after the hour of 9 p.m.

Notice respecting Proposed Abolition of the Steward Settlement Water-race District, County of Waitaki.

Wellington, 21st March, 1939.
IT is hereby notified that a petition has been presented
to His Excellency the Governor-General, under the
Land Drainage Act, 1908, and its amendments, praying
that the Steward Settlement Water-race District may be
abolished. All persons affected are hereby called upon to
lodge any written objections to, or petitions against the proposed abolition, which they desire to lodge, within one month
from the first publication of this notice, such objections or
petitions to be addressed to the Minister of Internal Affairs,
Wellington.

Transmitting and Receiving Officers for the Service of Notices by Telegraph.

IN pursuance of the powers conferred upon me by the
Post and Telegraph Act, 1928 (hereinafter termed "the
said Act"), and by the regulations made on the 12th May,
1914, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the
21st May, 1914, the following officers, at the addresses set
against their names, are hereby appointed transmitting
and receiving officers for the purpose of dealing with all
notices by telegraph sent under the said Act or regulations,
and of signing such certificates in relation to the service of
any such notices as are required or authorized to be signed
or given under the said Act or the regulations aforesaid.
