Applicants are required to produce for inspection when examined documentary evidence of their financial position, such as bank pass-books, certificates or letters of credit from managers of banks, financial institutions, or mercantile firms, or from private persons or parents undertaking to give financial assistance. Persons undertaking to assist financially should state to what extent they are prepared to do so and supply guarantees of their own financial position.
The ballot will be held immediately upon conclusion of the examination of applicants, and the successful applicant is required to pay immediately at conclusion of ballot a deposit comprising the first half-year's rent, broken-period rent, lease fee, and improvement loading.

MARLBOROUGH LAND DISTRICT.—FIRST-CLASS LAND.
Awatere County.—Taylor Pass Survey District.—Starborough Settlement.
SECTION 19, Block XXII: Area, 50 acres. Capital value, £575.* Half-yearly rent, £14 7s. 6d.
*Capital value includes the sum of £122 for improvements, belonging to the Crown, comprising 45 acres grassing, 144 chains fencing, and small plantation.
Weighted with £20 (payable in cash) for improvements, comprising a whare.
The property is situated three miles and a half from Seddon Railway-station and School, access being by good metalled road. The section ranges from flat to undulating and broken, all in pasture. The soil is of fair quality on clay formation; poorly watered by temporary spring.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned section is open for selection on renewable lease; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Nelson, up to noon on Tuesday, 11th April, 1939.
Applicants should appear personally for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Nelson, on Thursday, 13th April, 1939, at 10.30 o'clock a.m., but if any applicant is unable to attend he may be examined by any other Land Board or by any Commissioner of Crown Lands.

The section is situated within the Westland Mining District and is offered in terms of section 153 of the Land Act, 1924, which provides that no right to any mineral under the surface shall pertain to the lessee, whose rights shall be to the surface soil only.

NELSON LAND DISTRICT.—THIRD-CLASS LAND.
Inangahua County.—Mawheraiti Survey District.—Westland Mining District.
NATIONAL ENDOWMENT.
SECTION 2, Block II: Area, 607 acres. Capital value, £155; half-yearly rent, £3 2s.
Weighted with £160 (payable in cash) for improvements, consisting of four-roomed cottage and two sheds, 50 chains fencing, 180 acres felling and grassing (now mostly in form), and 15 acres stumped.
This section is situated in Burton's Creek Valley about five miles and a half from Mawheraiti Railway-station (on the Reefton-Greymouth line), Post-office and School, fifteen miles from Golden Coast Dairy Factory, and fifteen miles from Totara Flat Saleyards. Access is from Mawheraiti by two miles of formed road and three miles and a half unformed. The area consists of low flat and terrace land. Soil is of fair quality on the low flat, and poor on the terraces which run into pakihī formation; well watered by creeks. About 180 acres have been cleared but are now bad with fern.
