The Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendments.—
Fixing the Closing-hours of Grocers’ Shops within the
Combined District of Nelson.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded
to me from the occupiers of grocers’ shops within
the combined district of Nelson, comprising the City of
Nelson and the Town District of Tahunanui, pursuant to
section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22 :
And whereas I am satisfied that the signatures to such
requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the
said shops within the said combined district :
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I,
Hubert Thomas Armstrong, Minister of Labour, do hereby
direct that on and after the 19th day of December, 1938,
all the said shops within the said combined district shall
be closed in the evening of working-days as follows : On
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at
5.30 p.m., and on Fridays at 8 p.m.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded
to me from the occupiers of grocers’ shops within
the Borough of Te Awamutu pursuant to section 32 of the
Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22 :
And whereas I am satisfied that the signatures to such
requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the
said shops within the said borough :
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I,
Hubert Thomas Armstrong, Minister of Labour, do hereby
direct that on and after the 19th day of December, 1938,
all the said shops within the said borough shall be closed in
the evening of working-days as follows : On Mondays,
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 5 p.m., and on
Fridays at 8.30 p.m., with the following exceptions :—
(1) When Anzac Day falls upon a Friday the closing-hour
on the Thursday immediately preceding such day shall be
8.30 p.m., and
(2) Should the occupier of any shop affected by this notice
close his shop for the whole of any day observed in the
borough as a public holiday and such day falls upon a
Friday, then the closing-hour in the evening of the working-
day immediately preceding any such day shall be 8.30 p.m.
The notice gazetted on the 9th September, 1915, fixing
the closing-hours of all shops in the Borough of Te Awamutu
shall be and is hereby cancelled, in so far as it relates to the
shops affected by this notice, as from the date of the coming
into operation of this notice.

Prohibiting the Sale within the Borough of Te Awamutu
of certain Goods comprised in the Trade of a Grocer.

WHEREAS a petition in writing signed by a majority of
the occupiers of all the grocers’ shops within the
Borough of Te Awamutu has been forwarded to me desiring
that the sale of certain goods comprised in the trade of a
grocer—namely, baking powder, pearl barley, blue, candles,
coffee, coffee essence, cocoa, cornflour, flour, ginger, golden
syrup, honey (tins and cartons), jam, lemon peel, macaroni,
mustard, oatmeal, orange peel, pepper, rice, rolled oats, sago,
salt, soap (household), spices, starch, sugar, tapioca, tea,
tinned fish, treacle, and washing powder—be prohibited
during such time as the shops in such trade are required to
be closed in pursuance of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22 :
And whereas, I, Hubert Thomas Armstrong, Minister of
Labour, am satisfied that the sale of the said goods is com-
prised in the said trade within the said borough, and that
the signatures to such petition represent a majority of the
occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough :
Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 33 of the said Act,
I, Hubert Thomas Armstrong, do hereby direct that on and
after the 19th day of December, 1938, the sale of the said
goods within the said borough shall be and is hereby pro-
hibited as follows : On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
and Thursdays after the hour of 5 p.m., on Fridays after
the hour of 8.30 p.m., and on Saturdays after the hour of
1 p.m., with the following exceptions :—
(1) When Anzac Day falls upon a Friday the sale of the
said goods is prohibited after the hour of 8.30 p.m. on the
Thursday immediately preceding such day ; and
(2) On the working-day immediately preceding any Friday
which is observed in the borough as a public holiday the sale
of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 8.30 p.m.

Declaring a certain Service for Carriage of Goods by Motor-
vehicle to constitute a Goods-service.

PURSUANT to clause 21 of the Applied Provisions of the
Transport (Goods) Order, 1936, I, Robert Semple,
Minister of Transport, do hereby declare that any service
carried on by means of a motor-vehicle owned by or hired
from or to or operated by or for Martin Joseph Hilder,
Frederick Martin Hilder, or Richard Oswald Hilder, of
Otorohanga, Carriers, carried on either jointly or severally,
for the carriage of goods (whether for hire or reward or not)
shall be deemed for the purposes of the Transport Licensing
Act, 1931, and the Applied Provisions of the Transport
(Goods) Order, 1936, to be a goods-service within the meaning
of the said Act and the said provisions, whether or not such
service has been heretofore carried on under the authority
or in the terms of a goods-service license.

to be a goods-service within the meaning of the said Act and
the said provisions, whether or not such service has been
heretofore carried on under the authority and in terms of a
goods-service license.

Notice of Intention to take Additional Land in the City of
Auckland for the Purposes of a Police-station.

NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed, under the
provisions of the Public Works Act, 1928, to take the
land described in the Schedule hereto for the purposes of a
police-station : And notice is hereby further given that the
plan of the land so required to be taken is deposited in the
office of the District Engineer of the Public Works Depart-
ment at Auckland, and is there open for inspection ; and
that all persons affected by the taking of the said land
should, if they have any well-grounded objections to the
taking of such land, set forth the same in writing, and send
such writing, within forty days from the first publication of
this notice, to the Minister of Public Works, at Wellington.
SCHEDULE.
APPROXIMATE area of the piece of land required to be taken :
34 perches.
Being Lot 1 of 4 of Section 13, City of Auckland.
In the North Auckland Land District ; as the same is
more particularly delineated on the plan marked P.W.D.
101510, deposited in the office of the Minister of Public
Works at Wellington, and thereon edged red.
As witness my hand at Wellington, this 30th day of
