Appointments in the Public Service.

The Public Service Commissioners have made the following appointments in the Public Service :-

John Hadcroft,

To be an Inspector for the purposes of the Coal-mines Act, 1925, and its amendments, as from the 8th day of August, 1938.

John Michael Wallace Greig, B.Sc.,

To be an Inspector for the purposes of the Orchard and Garden Diseases Act, 1928, as from the 1st day of August, 1938.

Constable Richard Stephen Rusbatch,

To be Bailiff of the Warden’s Court at Cromwell for the Otago District constituted under the Mining Act, 1926, as from the 19th day of July, 1938.

John Bernard Sheahan,

To be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Otorohanga, as from the 1st day of August, 1938.

James Darling Anderson, and Frank Graham,

To be Inspectors for the purposes of the Fertilizers Act, 1927, as from the 4th day of August, 1938.

Eric Charles Nelson,

To be Bailiff of the Magistrates’ Court at Auckland for the purposes of the Magistrates’ Courts Act, 1928, as from the 1st day of July, 1938.

Declaring Areas to be Closely Populated Localities for the Purposes of the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936, Section 3.

In terms of section 3 of the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936, the Minister of Transport does hereby declare the areas described in the Schedule hereto to be closely populated localities for the purposes of the said section to the intent that a person driving any motor-vehicle on any road, street, or other place to which the public have access therein shall be subject to the maximum speed-limit of thirty miles an hour fixed by the said section.

SCHEDULE.

SITUATED within Kaitieke County—

All that area at Owhango consisting of the Te Kuiti - Bulls via Taumarunui Main Highway No. 23, commencing at a point 3 chains measured along the highway in a northerly direction from its junction with Onepu Road and terminating at a point 3 chains measured along the said main highway in a southerly direction from the main passenger entrance to the Owhango Railway-station, a distance of approximately 64 chains.

All that area at Owhango consisting of the Manunui-Owhango Main Highway No. 423, commencing at a point 3 chains measured along the road in a westerly direction from the Government railway-crossing and terminating at the junction of the said road with the Te Kuiti - Bulls via Taumarunui Main Highway, a distance of approximately 5 chains.

Approval of Testing Officer under the Motor-drivers' Regulations, 1931.

In terms of regulation 5 of the Motor-drivers' Regulations, 1931, the Minister of Transport does hereby approve, until further notice, of the person named in column 2 of the Schedule hereunder being Testing Officer under the said regulations for the authority specified in column 1 of the said Schedule.

Prohibition of Issue of Money-orders and Transmission of Postal Correspondence.

The Postmaster-General of the Dominion of New Zealand having reasonable ground for supposing that the persons and organizations whose names and addresses are shown in the Schedule hereunder are engaged in promoting or carrying out a lottery or scheme of chance, it is hereby ordered, under section 32 of the Post and Telegraph Act, 1928, that no money-order in favour of the said persons and organizations shall be issued and that no postal packet addressed to the said persons and organizations (either by their own or any assumed or fictitious names) or addressed to the addresses in the Schedule hereunder without a name, shall be either registered or forwarded by the post-office of New Zealand.

Hauraki Plains Drainage Area.—Notice of making and levying Rates.

I, FRANK LANGSTONE, Minister of Lands, in the exercise of powers conferred upon me by the Hauraki Plains Act, 1926, do hereby make and levy on the unimproved value of all lands within the district constituted under the said Act the general rates to meet maintenance-costs for the period 1st April, 1938, to 31st March, 1939, as described in the Schedule hereto.

The amount of such rates will be payable in one sum on the 11th August, 1938.

The rate-book of the district is open for inspection at the office of the Collector of Rates, Land Drainage Engineer’s Office, Room 45, Government Buildings, Customs Street West, Auckland, and a copy of same may be inspected at the office of the Land Drainage Engineer, at Kerepeehi, at all times at which those offices are open for the transaction of public business.

SCHEDULE.

Class A.—On the unimproved value of all lands classified as Class A by the appraiser appointed under the said Act, threepence and fifty-four one-hundredths of a penny (3·54d.) in the pound.

Class B.—On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as Class B, twopence and two-hundredths of a penny (2·02d.) in the pound.

Class C.—On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as Class C, fifty-one one-hundredths of a penny (0·51d.) in the pound.
