56 Acting Ordnance Artificer, 4th Class—continued. (C) Substitute “See No. 57 (F).”
(D) Substitute “Officers of a Gunnery School.”
(F) Not applicable.
57 Ordnance Artificer, 5th Class (A) Substitute “Captain of Training Establishment.”
(B) Substitute “Up to twenty-five years. No limit for lower age, provided candidates can produce necessary indentures. Must have served apprenticeship of at least five years as a Fitter and Turner.”
(C) Substitute—
“Educational.—As for E.R.A., 5th Class.
“Practical.—A practical examination in fitting and turning as laid down in O.U. 5362 Gunnery Training Manual. Must show promise of becoming an efficient Acting O.A., 4th Class, on reaching the age of twenty-one, if below that age on entry.”
(D) Substitute “Officers of the Naval Base, Devonport, appointed by the Naval Board.”
(F) Substitute “Selected candidates will undergo disciplinary training. They will then be sent to a Gunnery School to undergo the course of instruction laid down in the Gunnery Training Manual, at the conclusion of which they will be required to pass the examinations to qualify for the rating of O.A., 4th Class. Candidates who are required to serve a waiting period between dates of completion of disciplinary training and commencement of technical course are to be employed in the workshops of the Naval Base, Devonport. An O.A., 5th Class, who fails to pass the examination after fifteen months’ instruction in the Gunnery School, or whose conduct at any time while under training is unsatisfactory, is to be reported to the Naval Board in order that the question of his retention in the Service may be considered. On passing the examination the fact will be noted on their service certificates as ‘Passed for O.A., 4th Class,’ and they are then to be drafted to seagoing ships.”
69 Acting Shipwright, 4th Class (A) Substitute “Captain. (NOTE.—All direct entry Shipwrights will be entered in the rating of Shipwright, 5th Class).”
(B) Substitute “Shipwrights, 5th Class, on completing one year in that rating may be advanced to Acting Shipwright, 4th Class, but men who reach the age of twenty-one years before completing one year’s service may, if recommended as fit by their Commanding Officer, be rated Acting Shipwright, 4th Class, at any time between the dates of completion of six and twelve months’ service. (See also No. 70 (F).)”
70 Shipwright, 5th Class (A) Substitute “Captain of Training Establishment.”
(B) Substitute “Between nineteen and twenty-five years. Candidates must be able-bodied men, and must produce good credentials of character, industry, sobriety, and ability, and evidence of at least five years practical experience as a Shipwright.”
(C) Substitute—
“Educational.—As for E.R.A., 5th Class.
“Practical.—Must pass a trade test to show that he possesses a knowledge of wood, iron, and steel shipbuilding and that he is capable of using the ordinary tools for each efficiently; must know the different parts of a boat and how to repair them.”
(D) Substitute “Officers of the Naval Base, Devonport, assisted by a Commissioned or Warrant Shipwright.”
(F) Substitute—
“Successful candidates are to be drafted to seagoing ships on completion of disciplinary training.
“If a Shipwright, 5th Class, is not considered worthy of advancement on attaining one year’s seniority, the circumstances are to be submitted with a full report to the Naval Board for instructions.”
77 Acting Joiner, 4th Class (A) Substitute “Captain. (NOTE.—All Joiners will be entered in the rating of Joiner, 5th Class).”
(B) Substitute “Joiners, 5th Class, on completing one year in that rating may be advanced to Acting Joiner, 4th Class, but men who reach the age of twenty-one years before completing one year’s service may, if recommended as fit by their Commanding Officer, be rated Acting Joiner, 4th Class, at any time between the dates of completion of six and twelve months’ service. (See also No. 78 (F).)”
