These runs are situated approximately six miles from Pembroke and forty-three miles from Cromwell Railway-station by good gravelled roads. The runs comprise good grazing country, well watered by creeks, and contain some small areas of cultivatable land.
Special Conditions.
(1) The licensee shall, prior to the expiry of six years from the date of the license, take up residence on the land comprised in the license and shall thereafter reside thereon continuously.
(2) The licensee shall within two years of the date of the license plant with suitable trees to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of Crown Lands an area of a least one acre on some part of the land comprised in the license, and shall within the next two years so plant one additional acre. There shall be at least eight hundred trees planted on each acre, and the area so planted shall be securely fenced in by the licensee with rabbit-proof fencing. The licensee shall replant all failures from time to time as may be found necessary, and shall protect, trim, and maintain all such plantations during the term of the license to the satisfaction of the Commissioner.
(3) The licensee shall, in addition to the improvements already in existence, effect improvements as follows:—
(a) Within one year from the date of his license, to a value equal to one year’s rent payable under the license;
(b) Within two years from the date of his license, to a value equal to two years’ rent payable under the license; and
(c) Within six years from the date of his license, to a value equal to three years’ rent payable under the license.
(4) The right is reserved to the Crown to enter on the land at any time during the license for the purpose of killing deer.

Pastoral Run in Otago Land District for License.
District Lands and Survey Office,
Dunedin, 23rd February, 1938.
NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned pastoral run is open for license in terms of Part VI of the Land Act, 1924; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Monday, 11th April, 1938.
Applicants should appear personally before the Land Board for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin, on Wednesday, 13th April, 1938, at 10.30 o’clock a.m., but if any applicant is unable to attend he may be examined by any other Land Board or by any Commissioner of Crown Lands.
Applicants are required to produce for inspection when examined documentary evidence of their financial position, such as bank pass-books, certificates or letters of credit from managers of banks, financial institutions, or mercantile firms, or from private persons or parents undertaking to give financial assistance. Persons undertaking to assist financially should state to what extent they are prepared to do so and supply guarantees of their own financial position.
The ballot will be held immediately upon conclusion of the examination of applicants, and the successful applicant is required to pay immediately at conclusion of ballot a deposit comprising the first half-year’s rent, broken-period rent, license fee, and amount of improvement loading.
NOTE.—This land is offered in terms of section 153 of the Land Act, 1924, which provides that no right to any mineral under the surface shall pertain to the lessee, whose rights shall be to the surface soil only.
SCHEDULE.
OTAGO LAND DISTRICT.—PASTORAL RUN.
Bruce County.—Table Hill Survey District.—Otago Mining District.
RUN 662 : Area, 535 acres. Annual rental, £10.
Term of license : Twenty-one years.
Weighted with £17 1s. (to be paid in cash) for improvements, comprising fencing.
Situated about ten miles from Milton School and Post-office by formed and part metalled road. Part of the area is covered with manuka, the balance being partly open and containing a good area of grazing country. The area is well watered by creeks and springs, with the Tokomairiro River on the west boundary.

STATE FOREST SERVICE NOTICES.
Milling-timber for Sale by Public Tender.
State Forest Service,
Hokitika, 22nd February, 1938.
NOTICE is hereby given that written tenders for the purchase of the undermentioned milling-timber will close at the office of the State Forest Service, Hokitika, at noon on Friday, the 11th day of March, 1938.

SCHEDULE.
WESTLAND FOREST-CONSERVATION REGION.—WESTLAND LAND DISTRICT.
ALL the milling-timber on that piece of land containing 46 acres, situated in Blocks V and IX, Hohonu Survey District, Provisional State Forests Nos. 1605 and 1601, situated about twelve miles from Kumara Railway-station.
The total estimated quantity of timber in cubic feet is 77,834, or in board feet 494,920, made up as follows:—

Terms of Payment.
A marked cheque for one-fourth of the upset price, together with £1 Is. license fee, must accompany tender, and the balance be paid in three equal monthly instalments, the first falling due one month after the date of sale.
Terms and Conditions.

All instalment-payments shall be secured by “on demand” promissory notes made and endorsed to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of State Forests, and interest at the rate of 1 per cent. per annum in excess of current bank overdraft rates will be charged on all notes overdue from the date of maturity to the date of payment.

The right to cut and remove the timber will be sold in accordance with the provisions of the Forests Act, 1921-22, the regulations in force thereunder, and these conditions.

The aforementioned quality, quantity, and kind as to the said timber shall be taken as sufficiently accurate for the purposes of this sale, and no contract for the purchase shall be voidable, nor shall the successful purchaser be entitled to any abatement in price, by reason of the said timber being of less quantity, quality, or kind as stated herein or in any advertisement having reference to the said timber.

A return giving the number of logs cut of each species and their contents must be made quarterly by the licensee on the last days of March, June, September, and December, respectively, in each year. A return must also be made on the same dates showing the output of sawn timber of each species. These returns may be ascertained and verified by inspection of the books of the mill, or by such other means as the Conservator may require, and for this purpose the accounts and books shall be open to the inspection of the Conservator, a Forest Ranger, or other duly authorized officer.

The attention of all tenderers is drawn to the fact that the local controlling body may require the successful tenderer to pay any claims or charges which may be made by that body for the maintenance of the road over which the timber may be transported, and before a sawmill license is issued a letter indicating that satisfactory arrangements have been made in this connection must be produced to the undersigned.

Intending tenderers are expected to visit the locality and to satisfy themselves in every particular on all matters relative to the sale.

Each tenderer must state the total price that he is prepared to pay for the timber. The highest or any tender will not necessarily be accepted, and the timber described is submitted for sale subject to the final acceptance of the tender by the Commissioner of State Forests.

The right is reserved to the Commissioner of State Forests to withdraw from sale any or all of the said timber either before or after the closing date for receipt of tenders.

If no tender is accepted for the timber herein mentioned it will remain open for application for three months from the date tenders close.

Tenders should be on the special form obtainable from any office of the State Forest Service, and should be enclosed in envelopes addressed “Conservator of Forests, Hokitika,” and endorsed “Tender for Timber.”
The conditions, which will be inserted in the license to be issued to the purchaser, and further particulars may be obtained on application to the undersigned or to the Director of Forestry, Wellington.
