Appointments in the Public Service.

THE Public Service Commissioners have made the following appointments in the Public Service :
Albert James Ching,
to be Sheriff for the District of North Auckland for the purposes of the Judicature Act, 1908, as from the 1st day of February, 1937.
Charles Leslie Albert Stevenson,
to be Assistant Clerk of the Magistrates' Court at Hawera for the purposes of the Magistrates' Courts Act, 1928, as from the 9th day of December, 1936.
Thomas Leslie Lyons,
to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Herekino, as from the 20th day of January, 1937.
Arthur Frederick Owen Clarke,
to be Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of New Zealand at Timaru for the purposes of the Judicature Act, 1908, and Assistant Clerk of the Magistrates' Court at Timaru for the purposes of the Magistrates' Courts Act, 1928, as from the 23rd day of November, 1936.
Christopher Vincent Cosmos Stanich,
to be an Inspector of Sea-fishing for the purposes of Part I of the Fisheries Act, 1908, as from the 25th day of January, 1937.
Gerald Harcourt Weir,
to be a Ranger for the purposes of the Animals Protection and Game Act, 1921-22, and an officer for the purposes of Part II of the Fisheries Act, 1908, for the Rotorua Acclimatization District, as from the 1st day of February, 1937.
Thomas Kane,
to be Returning Officer for the Electoral District of Waitemata for the purposes of the Electoral Act, 1927, and Returning Officer for the Waitemata Licensing District for the purposes of the Licensing Act, 1908, and its amendments, as from the 28th day of January, 1937.

Notice as to the licensing of certain Industries under Part III of the Industrial Efficiency Act, 1936.
PURSUANT to the authority conferred on me by section 14 of the Industrial Efficiency Act, 1936, I hereby give notice that the industry hereinafter specified may, on and after the taking effect of this notice, be carried on only pursuant to a license issued under Part III of the said Act.
This notice shall take effect in accordance with the following provisions, namely:
(a) In the case of persons who, on the date of the publication of this notice in the Gazette, are lawfully engaged in carrying on the industry to which this notice relates, this notice shall (except as hereinafter mentioned) take effect on the 1st day of December, 1938, or on such earlier or later date (if any) as may hereafter be specified by a further notice under the section hereinbefore referred to. This paragraph shall not apply to the carrying on of business by any person with a number of fishing-boats in excess of the number in use by him on the date of the publication of this notice ;
(b) In all other cases this notice shall take effect on the date of its publication in the Gazette.
The industry to which this notice relates is the following :— The taking of oysters from oyster-beds.
In this notice the terms “oysters,” “oyster-beds,” and “fishing-boats,” and the term “taking” in relation to oysters, have the same meanings respectively as in the Fisheries Act, 1908.
Applications for licenses required in accordance with this notice may be made to the Secretary of the Bureau of Industry, Department of Industries and Commerce, Wellington.

Defining Westhaven River Limits.
IN pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 189 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908, I, Peter Fraser, Minister of Marine, do hereby define the Westhaven Restricted Limits within which river-limit vessels may ply to be inside a straight line drawn from Bar Point to South Cone Head.
As witness my hand at Wellington, this 1st day of February, 1937.

Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, and its Amendments, fixing the Closing-hours of Tobacconists' Shops within the Borough of Te Awamutu.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded to me from the occupiers of tobacconists’ shops within the Borough of Te Awamutu pursuant to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22:
And whereas I, Hubert Thomas Armstrong, Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough:
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I do hereby direct that on and after the 22nd day of February, 1937, all the said shops within the said borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 5.30 p.m., and on Fridays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) On the working-day immediately preceding Good Friday, and on the working-day immediately preceding Anniversary Day, Anzac Day, or the King’s Birthday, when any such day falls on a Friday, the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.; and (2) on the working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day and on the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day the closing-hour shall be 10 p.m. The notice published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 9th September, 1915, fixing the closing-hours of all shops in the Borough of Te Awamutu shall be and is hereby cancelled, in so far as it relates to the shops affected by this notice, as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.

Agreement for Grant of Pipe-line Easement in favour of Carr, Pountney (Morrisville), Limited, over Land in Hapuakohe Survey District, taken for the Hoe-o-Tainui Block Access Road, assented to.
WHEREAS by a Proclamation dated the 11th day of November, 1936, and published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 81 of the 3rd day of December, 1936, and registered in the Land Transfer Office at Auckland as No. 9239, all those pieces of land comprising 2 acres 16 perches, being portions of Hoe-o-Tainui North 4A 2B and 4B 2 Blocks, situated in Block XII, Hapuakohe Survey District, were taken for the purposes of a road—viz., the Hoe-o-Tainui Block Access Road:
And whereas Stanley Austin Carr, of Auckland, Merchant, as mortgagee in possession, was entitled to compensation for his interest in the said land:
And whereas Carr, Pountney (Morrisville), Limited, became the assignee of the said Stanley Austin Carr:
And whereas the Minister of Public Works agreed to grant to the said Carr, Pountney (Morrisville), Limited, a pipe-line easement over the said area of 2 acres 16 perches in full satisfaction of the compensation aforesaid:
And whereas the said Carr, Pountney (Morrisville), Limited, agreed to accept such grant in satisfaction of the said compensation:
Now, therefore, I, Robert Semple, Minister of Public Works, do hereby give notice, in pursuance of section 97 of the Public Works Act, 1928, that I assent to the above agreement.
