Appointments in the Public Service.

THE Public Service Commissioners have made the following appointments in the Public Service :-
Hector Gordon McKenzie McLaggan, to be Deputy Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Karioi, as from the 26th day of August, 1937.
Thomas Henry Langford, to be Bailiff of the Magistrates' Courts at Lower Hutt and Petone for the purposes of the Magistrates' Courts Act, 1928, and Maintenance Officer at the Magistrates' Courts at Lower Hutt and Petone for the purposes of the Destitute Persons Amendment Act, 1926, as from the 30th day of August, 1937.

Defining Extended River-limits for the Port of Whangarei.
IN pursuance of the power and authority conferred upon me by section 189 of the Shipping and Seamen Act, 1908, I, Peter Fraser, Minister of Marine, do hereby define the Whangarei extended river-limits within which extended river-limit vessels may ply to be within a radius of three nautical miles from Sugarloaf Island, Whangarei.

Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendments, prohibiting the Sale within the Borough of Te Aroha of certain Goods comprised in the Trade of a Tobacconist.
WHEREAS a petition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the tobacconists' shops within the Borough of Te Aroha, has been forwarded to me desiring that the sale of certain goods comprised in the trade of a tobacconist—namely, tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, and smoking-requisites—be prohibited during such time as the said shops are required to be closed in pursuance of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22 :
And whereas I, William Lee Martin, acting for the Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the sale of the said goods is comprised in the said trade within the said borough, and that the signatures to such petition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said borough : Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 33 of the said Act, I do hereby direct that on and after the 27th day of September, 1937, the sale of the said goods within the said borough shall be and is hereby prohibited as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after the hour of 6 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays after the hour of 11.30 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) On the working-day immediately preceding Good Friday the sale of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 11.30 p.m., and on the Saturday immediately following after the hour of 6 p.m.; (2) on the working-day immediately preceding Anniversary Day, Anzac Day, or the King’s Birthday, when any such day falls on a Saturday, the sale of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 11.30 p.m.; (3) on the working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day and on the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day the sale of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 11.30 p.m.

Revoking a Warrant declaring an Area to be a Closely Populated Locality and declaring an Area to be a Closely Populated Locality for the Purposes of Section 3 of the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936.
IN terms of section 3 of the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, the Minister of Transport does hereby revoke the Warrant which declares a certain area within Ohinemuri County to be a closely populated locality, which is dated the 8th day of March, 1937, and which is published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 14 of the 11th day of March, 1937, at page 541, and does hereby declare the area described in the Schedule hereto to be a closely populated locality for the purposes of the said section to the intent that a person driving any motor-vehicle on any road, street, or other place to which the public have access therein shall be subject to the maximum speed-limit of thirty miles an hour fixed by the said section.
SCHEDULE.
Situated within Ohinemuri County— All that area adjoining the Pokeno-Waihi Main Highway No. 15 at Waikino Township, commencing at a point 2 chains measured along the said main highway in a south-westerly direction from the suspension-bridge across the Ohinemuri River, and terminating at the Government railway level-crossing approximately 15 chains north-west of the Waikino Railway-station.

Excluding Streets and Roads from Limitation as to Speed imposed by the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936, Section 3.
IN terms of section 3 of the Motor-vehicles Amendment Act, 1936, the Minister of Transport does hereby exclude the streets and roads described in the Schedule hereto from the limitation as to speed imposed by the said section.
SCHEDULE.
Situated within Hawera Borough— Auckland-Wellington via Taranaki Main Highway No. 1 (all that portion from its junction with Gladstone Street to the south-eastern boundary of Hawera Borough, a distance of approximately 32 chains). Waihi Main Highway No. 545 (all that portion within Hawera Borough from the junction of the said main highway with Glover Street to the junction of the said main highway with High Street, a distance of approximately 54 chains).
Situated within Normanby Town District— Auckland-Wellington via Taranaki Main Highway No. 1 (all that portion from a point 5 chains measured along the road in a southerly direction from the junction of the said main highway with Fox Street to the southern boundary of Normanby Town District, a distance of approximately 40 chains).
Situated within Stratford Borough— Auckland-Wellington via Taranaki Main Highway No. 1 (all that portion from the northern boundary of Stratford Borough to the junction of the said main highway with Craig Street, a distance of approximately 30 chains; and all that portion from the junction of the said main highway with Romeo Street to the southern boundary of Stratford Borough, a distance of approximately 32 chains). Stratford-Opunake Main Highway No. 79 (all that portion from the western boundary of Stratford Borough to the junction of the said main highway with Brecken Road, a distance of approximately 42 chains).
