Promotion and Appointment in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (New Zealand Division).

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve of the undermentioned promotion and confirmation of appointment in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (New Zealand Division) :—

Sub-Lieutenant John Neat Allan promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, R.N.V.R. (N.Z.D.), to date 23rd March, 1937.

Probationary Sub-Lieutenant Arthur George Newell confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, R.N.V.R. (N.Z.D.), to date 1st February, 1936.

to be Clerk of the Magistrates’ Court at Wairoa for the purposes of the Magistrates’ Courts Act, 1928, Official Assignee at Wairoa for the Supreme Court District of Wellington for the purposes of the Bankruptcy Act, 1908, Registrar of Marriages for the District of Wairoa under the Marriage Act, 1908, Registrar of Births and Deaths for the District of Wairoa under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1924, and Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Wairoa under the Maori Births and Deaths Registration Regulations dated 4th February, 1935, as from the 27th day of May, 1937.

Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendments, fixing the Closing-hours of (1) Boot and Shoe Dealers’, (2) Clothiers’, (3) Cycle-dealers’, (4) Drapers’, (5) Fancy-goods Dealers’, (6) Grocers’, (7) Hardware-dealers’, (8) Radio-dealers’, (9) Stationers’, and (10) Seedsmen’s Shops within the Borough of Paeroa.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded to me from the occupiers of shops in each of the trades of (1) boot and shoe dealer, (2) clothier, (3) cycle-dealer, (4) draper, (5) fancy-goods dealer, (6) grocer, (7) hardware-dealer, (8) radio-dealer, (9) stationer, and (10) seedsman within the Borough of Paeroa, pursuant to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22 :

And whereas I, Patrick Charles Webb, Acting Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the said trades within the said borough :

Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I do hereby direct that on and after the 5th day of July, 1937, all the shops in each of the said trades within the said borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows : On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 5 p.m., and on Fridays at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions —(1) When Anniversary Day, Good Friday, Anzac Day, or the King’s Birthday falls on the day upon which the late night is usually observed, then the closing-hour on the evening of the working-day immediately preceding such day shall be 9 p.m. ; (2) on the evening of the working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day and on the evening of the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day the closing-hour shall be 10 p.m.

The notice published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 20th March, 1930, fixing closing-hours of (1) boot and shoe dealers’, (2) cycle-dealers’, (3) drapers’, (4) fancy-goods dealers’, (5) grocers’, (6) hardware-dealers’, and (7) stationers’ shops in the Borough of Paeroa shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.
