Notice to Mariners No. 39 of 1936.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 25th August, 1936.

WEATHER REPORTS.

ALL vessels within range of the New Zealand W/T stations,
and not more than 1,000 miles from the coast, are
requested to furnish daily weather reports to the New Zealand
Meteorological Service. The messages should be addressed to
“ Weather Wellington ” through the normal commercial
channels and despatched as soon as possible after the making
of the observations. The International Ships’ Wireless
Weather Telegraphy Code, Copenhagen, 1929, as modified at
Warsaw in 1935, should be used. The coded message consists
of six or seven groups of five figures, and may be given in one of
the three following forms, the first four groups being common
to all. They are as follows :—

(i) YQLLL 111GG DDFww PPVTT 3CLCmCHN
tdKdWNh døfabb
(ii) YQLLL 111GG DDFww PPVTT 6KdCN tadsAWCH
(iii) YQLLL 111GG DDFww PPVTT 9SKdW CNNhAta

The letters have the significance of those adopted with the
Copenhagen Code except that (a) Y replaces P for the figure
representing the day of the week, (b) PP are used instead of
BB for pressure, (c) Nh replaces NL and (d) there are slight
alterations in the codes for ww and W. These changes are
to be introduced officially as from 1st January, 1937.

Of the three forms of the code, that preferred is the third
one in which the supplementary groups begin with the figure
9. For reporting to the New Zealand Meteorological Service
it is requested observations be made at 2100 G.M.T. Reports
of 0300 G.M.T. observations would also be appreciated. Those
vessels which find observations at these times impossible,
but which make them at the universal times, should report
both the 1800 and 0000 G.M.T. observations.
