SYLLABUS.

A. Colours and principal meanings of Naval flags and pendants.
Contents and uses of Boats’ Signal Book and International Code.
Simple manoeuvring Signals.

B. Practical :—
To make and read semaphore at twelve words per minute, and
To make and read morse at sixteen words per minute by light
(plain language only).
To make and read morse at twelve words per minute by buzzer
(plain language only).

C. To have a fair knowledge of the W/T organization of New Zealand
Station.
To understand methods of handling W/T traffic and simple procedure.
(To pass : A, 70 per cent. ; B, 90 per cent. ; C, 70 per cent.)

III. Examination in V/S and W/T for Lieutenants selected and
qualifying for Signal duties. Qualification (S).

Principal distinguishing signals and their uses.
Manoeuvring signals.
Raising steam.
Distance apart of columns and ships in column.
Guide of the Fleet.
Man overboard in time of peace.
Man overboard in time of war.
Signals to be displayed by vessels hunting submarines.
Signals to be displayed when working cables.
Signals to be displayed when towing sweeps.
Signals to be displayed by an auxiliary vessel when on patrol.
Enemy reports.
International code of signals .. } General knowledge and
Boats Signal-book .. .. method of use.
Drafting and despatch of messages.
Use of Nodeco, Notbywit, and paraphrasing.
Negative reports.

Coding .. Practical use of A.V.S.B. and auxiliary code.
Procedure .. General rules for V/S in a Fleet.
Instructions for signalling by flags, flashing, and semaphore.
Instructions for use of 1, 2, and 3 letter morse procedure signals.

W/T .. Organization—
Naval W/T organization in peace and war.
Methods of handling W/T traffic.
Duties of Senior W/T ratings.
W/T guard system.
Procedure—Full, abbreviated, manoeuvring and commercial W/T procedure.
