(a) Definition of terms.
(b) Standard method of passing orders.
(c) Elementary principles of Fire Control.
(d) The Dumaresq and Range Clock.
(e) Control of a single gun and use of spotting rules.
Rangefinders (25 marks)—
(a) Practical rangetaking.
(b) Tests of rangefinders.
Ammunition (75 marks)—
(a) General types of B.L. and Q.F. charges and markings.
(b) Types of tubes; precautions in using and keeping.
(c) Types of shell and fuzes used with them for small vessels.
(d) Stowage of ammunition: Markings of boxes.
(e) Fuzing and unfuzing shell.
(f) General regulations concerning care of explosives, misfired rounds, ammunition stowed in exposed positions, wetted and defective ammunition.
(g) Naval Magazine and Explosive Regulations: General knowledge of Chapters I–VII.
General Gunnery (30 marks)—
(a) Responsibilities of Officer of Quarters as laid down in O.U. 5238.
Machine Gun (25 marks)—
(a) To understand the action of, and to be able to use a Lewis gun.
Gun Drill (100 marks)—
4 in. Q.F.S.A. gun and 4 in. B.L. gun. To be able to drill with detail and take charge of the gun’s crew, and to be able to take any number at these guns.
Stripping (75 marks)—
4 in. Q.F. Mk. IV gun on P. IX mounting and 4 in. B.L. Mk. IX on C.P. I mounting. To understand the action of, and to be able to strip the mechanisms taught.
(To pass: 50 per cent. in each subject, and 65 per cent. of the total.)

| Section V—Ability to take charge of operation of “ A ” sweep and Oropesa sweep, and the laying-out and weighing of Dan buoys | 75 per cent. Officers must show themselves capable of taking charge and using their own initiative. Standard should be approximately that of Sub-Lieutenant, Royal Navy. |
| Depth Charges—
Depth charge, type D ; D.C. Pistols, Mk. IV and V
Principles of tactics of D.C. attacks | Good knowledge (70 per cent.). |
