(b) The depth of the nut of the swivel pin must be at least 1⅝.
(c) The swivel-pin should be screwed to British Whitworth Standard dimensions and have the end riveted over or secured by welding it to the end of the pin.
(d) Nevertheless swivels held in stock by any shipowner at the coming into force of these regulations may be used up if before being placed in use they are approved by an Inspector of Cargo Gear or Surveyor of Ships.
(e) The swivel shall be tested as prescribed in Part IX hereof.

Hooks.

38. All hooks for use as cargo gear shall comply with the following requirements:—
    (a) The hook shall be made of selected wrought iron or selected mild steel of suitable tensile strength and ductility.
    (b) The hook shall be drawn out of the solid and shall be carefully annealed after forging.
    (c) The hook shall be tested as prescribed in Part IX hereof.

PART IX.—TESTING OF CHAIN ATTACHMENTS.

Where attached to Chain.

39. Every chain attachment attached to a chain shall be tested to withstand the same proof load as the chain to which it is attached.

Where not attached to Chain.

40. Every chain attachment not attached to a chain shall be tested to withstand a load of double the maximum working load prescribed by these regulations.

Identification Mark.

41. An identification mark or number shall be stamped upon every chain attachment the subject of a test.

Defects under Test.

42. Every chain attachment must show no sign of appreciable permanent deformation under test, nor any flaw crack fracture or other defect.

Test Certificate required.

43. A test certificate shall be supplied in respect of every chain attachment not attached to a chain, and every chain attachment attached to chain which is not included in the test certificate referred to in clause (f) of Regulation 32: Provided that when chain attachments not attached to chain are of identical design, material, and dimensions, and are tested together in one group, one test certificate for the total number of attachments so tested shall be deemed to be sufficient.

Testing Officer to sign Certificate.

44. Every test certificate shall be signed by a person witnessing the test, and the requirements of paragraph (d) of Regulation 32 hereof shall apply.

Contents of Test Certificate.

45. Every test certificate shall show—(1) The name and address of the testing establishment; (2) date of test; (3) the tensile load; (4) the identifying mark or number stamped on the chain attachment; (5) description or main dimensions of the chain attachment; (6) number of chain attachments to which the certificate refers; (7) tensile strength, elongation, and grade of material; (8) the amount of permanent deformation (if any) of chain attachment under test.

Tests witnessed by Surveyor of Ships or Inspector of Gear.

46. Notwithstanding anything hereinbefore contained, a test certificate given under the hand of a Surveyor of Ships or Inspector of Gear in respect of any chain attachment and in a form approved by the Chief Surveyor of Ships shall be deemed to be the equivalent of the certificate of test mentioned in Regulations 43, 44, and 45.

PART X.—CHAINS AND CHAIN ATTACHMENTS IN USE.

Annealing of Large Chain.

47. Chains and chain attachments which have at any time been put into use shall not be used for working cargo unless within a period of twelve months immediately before any occasion of use they have been annealed as required by Regulation 51 hereof.
