Appointments in the Public Service.

THE Public Service Commissioner has made the following appointments in the Public Service:—

Erle Wynne Gilliver,

to be a Ranger under the Animals Protection and Game Act, 1921–22, for the Auckland Acclimatization District, as from the 1st day of November, 1933.

John Classon Harding,

to be Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Nelson, as from the 1st day of November, 1933.

Thomas Andrew Wilson,

to be Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Rawene, as from the 27th day of October, 1933.

Lloyd Durham Kingdon,

to be Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Russell, as from the 27th day of October, 1933.

Percy Harold Wylde,

to be the Returning Officer for the Electoral District of Wellington South for the purposes of the Electoral Act, 1927, as from the 1st day of November, 1933.

Christopher Ward,

to be Registrar of Births and Deaths of Maoris at Kaiapoi, as from the 30th day of October, 1933.

Notifying Land in the Hawke’s Bay Land District subject to the Land for Settlements Act, 1925.

Wellington, 21st October, 1933.

PURSUANT to the provisions of the Land for Settlements Act, 1925, I hereby notify that the undermentioned land, being the land known as Awamate Settlement, which was acquired under the Land for Settlements Act, 1925, became subject to the said Act as from 30th June, 1930.

SCHEDULE.

HAWKE’S BAY LAND DISTRICT.—AWAMATE SETTLEMENT.

ALL that area in the Hawke’s Bay Land District, containing by admeasurement 677 acres 1 rood 4 perches, more or less, being Aranui A, B, C, D, and E Blocks, part Aranui Block and part Matuku Block, Blocks XVI and XXI, Taramarama Survey District, and bounded as follows:—

Aranui A, B, and C Blocks, containing by admeasurement 87 acres 0 roods 20 perches, more or less: Bounded on the north-east and south-east generally by the Wairoa River; on the south-west by Aranui 1b Block, 2964·0 links; and on the north-west by Aranui F Block, 3047·6 links.

Aranui D and E Blocks, containing by admeasurement 38 acres 2 roods 31 perches, more or less: Bounded on the north generally by the Wairoa River; on the south-east by Aranui F Block, 2394·2 links; on the south-west by the Aranui 1b Block, 2903·9 and 340·2 links; on the north-west by aforesaid Aranui 1b Block, 252·4 links.

Part Aranui Block and Part Matuku Block, containing by admeasurement 551 acres 1 rood 33 perches, more or less: Bounded on the north-east by Aranui 1b Block, 6469·6 links; on the east and south generally by the Wairoa River; and on the south-west generally by Makakahi Stream and part Matuku Block, 2150·1 links; and on the north-west generally by public roads 8933·2 and 2258·8 links respectively, save and excepting an undefined interest of 25·39 perches being the shares of Tiaki Johnston, deceased, and Te Kapua Haturu, whose present whereabouts are not known.

Be all the aforesaid linkages more or less. As the same is more particularly delineated on the plan marked L. and S. 21/149/1074, and deposited in the Head Office, Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, under No. 2659, and thereon bordered pink.

With reference to my despatch Circular C. No. 248 of the 9th September, 1932, I have the honour to transmit, for the information of His Majesty’s Government in New Zealand, the accompanying copies of a circular issued by the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament regarding nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for 1934.

  1. I should be glad if the conditions of the prize could be made known to those bodies and persons who are qualified to nominate candidates.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.

ALL proposals of candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is to be distributed 10th December, 1934, must, in order to be taken into consideration, be laid before the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament by a duly qualified person before the first of February of the same year.

Any one of the following persons is held to be duly qualified: (a) Members and late members of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, as well as the advisers appointed at the Norwegian Nobel Institute; (b) Members of Parliament and Members of Government of the different States, as well as Members of the Interparliamentary Union; (c) Members of the International Arbitration Court at The Hague; (d) Members of the Commission of the Permanent International Peace Bureau; (e) Members and Associates of the Institute of International Law; (f) University Professors of Political Science and of Law, of History, and of Philosophy; and (g) persons who have received the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize may also be accorded to institutions or associations.

According to the Code of Statutes, § 8, the grounds upon which any proposal is made must be stated and handed in along with such papers and other documents as may therein be referred to.

According to § 3, every written work, to qualify for a prize, must have appeared in print.

For particulars, qualified persons are requested to apply to the office of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, Drammensvei 19, Oslo.

Prohibition of Issue of Money-orders and Transmission of Postal Correspondence.

THE Postmaster-General of the Dominion of New Zealand having reasonable ground for supposing that the persons and firm whose names and addresses are shown in the Schedule hereunder are engaged in promoting or carrying out a lottery or scheme of chance, it is hereby ordered, under section 32 of the Post and Telegraph Act, 1928, that no money-order in favour of any of the said persons or of the said firm shall be issued and that no postal packet addressed to any of the said persons or to the said firm (either by their own or any fictitious or assumed names) or addressed to any of the addresses in the Schedule hereunder without a name shall be either registered or forwarded by the Post Office of New Zealand.
