Appointments in the Public Service.

THE Public Service Commissioner has made the following
appointments in the Public Service:
James Joseph Leander Burke
to be Registrar of Deeds for the District of Wellington in
pursuance of section 6 of the Deeds Registration Act, 1908,
as from the 1st day of July, 1932.
Constable John Albert Elstone
to be Clerk of the Licensing Committee for the District of
Bay of Islands for the purposes of the Licensing Act, 1908,
as from the 3rd day of August, 1932.

Hauraki Plains Drainage Area.—Notice of making and
levying Rates.
I, ETHELBERT ALFRED RANSOM, Minister of Lands,
in the exercise of powers conferred upon me by the
Hauraki Plains Act, 1926, do hereby make and levy on the
unimproved value of all lands within the district constituted
under the said Act the general rates to meet maintenance
costs for the period 1st April, 1932, to 31st March, 1933, as
described in the Schedule hereto.
The amount of such rates will be payable in one sum on
the 26th August, 1932.
The rate-book of the district is open for inspection at the
office of the Collector of Rates, Chief Drainage Engineer’s
Office, Room 44, Government Buildings, Customs Street,
Auckland, and a copy of same may be inspected at the office
of the Chief Drainage Engineer, at Kerepeehi, at all times at
which those offices are open for the transaction of public
business.
SCHEDULE.
Class A : On the unimproved value of all lands classified as
Class A by the Appraiser appointed under the said Act—
Threepence and twenty-two one-hundredths of a penny
(3·22d.) in the pound.
Class B : On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as
Class B—One penny and eighty-four one-hundredths of a
penny (1·84d.) in the pound.
Class C : On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as
Class C—Forty-six one-hundredths of a penny (0·46d.)
in the pound.

Approving of Testing Officer under the Motor-drivers
Regulations, 1931.
IN terms of Regulation 5 of the Motor-drivers Regulations,
1931, I, Ethelbert Alfred Ransom, Acting Minister of
Transport, do hereby approve, until further notice, of the
person named in Column 2 of the Schedule hereunder being
a Testing Officer under the said regulations for the local
authority described in Column 1 of the said Schedule.

NOTICE is hereby given in accordance with the provisions
of subsection (2) of section 18 of the Surveyors Registra-
tion Act, 1928, that the name of
Andrew Murray
has been removed from the Register of Surveyors.

Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its
Amendment, fixing the Closing-hours of Pork Butchers'
Shops within the Combined District of Petone and Lower
Hutt.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded
to me from the occupiers of pork butchers’ shops
in the Combined District of Petone and Lower Hutt, com-
prising the Boroughs of Petone and Lower Hutt, pursuant
to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22;
And whereas, I, Adam Hamilton, Minister of Labour, am
satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a
majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the
said combined district.
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I do
hereby direct that on and after the 29th day of August,
1932, all the said shops within the said combined district
shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows :
Subject to closing not later than 1 p.m. on the day observed
as the statutory closing-day, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wed-
nesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays
at 9 p.m., with the following exceptions : (1) If any shop is
closed in any week on the whole of Friday or if in any week
the occupier observes pursuant to section 21 (b) of the Shops
and Offices Act, 1921–22, Friday as the statutory closing-
day, then and in such case the closing-hour on Thursday
in such week for such shop shall be 9 p.m. ; (2) in the evening
of the working-day immediately preceding each of the following
days—viz., Christmas Day and New Year’s Day—the closing-
hour shall be 10 p.m.
The notice dated the 30th September, 1914, and published
in the New Zealand Gazette of the 1st October, 1914, fixing
the closing-hours of pork butchers’ shops in the Borough of
Petone shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of
the coming into operation of this notice.

said combined district:
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I do
hereby direct that on and after the 29th day of August, 1932,
all the said shops within the said combined district shall be
closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Subject to
closing not later than 1 p.m. on the day observed as the
statutory closing-day, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays,
Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 5 p.m., with the fol-
lowing exception: On the working-day immediately preceding
each of the following days—viz., New Year’s Day, Christmas
Day, and Good Friday—the closing-hour shall be 6 p.m.
The notice dated the 19th February, 1919, and published
in the New Zealand Gazette of the 20th February, 1919, fixing
closing-hours of butchers’ shops within the City of Wellington
shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming
into operation of this notice.
