Hauraki Plains Drainage Area.—Notice of making and levying Rates.
I, ETHELBERT ALFRED RANSOM, Minister of Lands, in the exercise of powers conferred upon me by the Hauraki Plains Act, 1926, do hereby make and levy on the unimproved value of all lands within the district constituted under the said Act, the general rates to meet maintenance costs for the period 1st April, 1931, to 31st March, 1932, as described in the Schedule hereto.
The amount of such rates will be payable in one sum on the 14th August, 1931.
The rate-book of the district is open for inspection at the office of the Collector of Rates, Chief Drainage Engineer’s Office, 5 Law Court Buildings, High Street, Auckland, and a copy of same may be inspected at the office of the Chief Drainage Engineer, at Kerepeehi, at all times at which those offices are open for the transaction of public business.

SCHEDULE.
Class A.—On the unimproved value of all lands classified as Class A by the Appraiser appointed under the said Act, three pence and fifty-two one-hundredths of a penny (3·52d.) in the pound.
Class B.—On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as Class B, two pence and one-hundredth of a penny (2·01d.) in the pound.
Class C.—On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as Class C, one half-penny (0·5d.) in the pound.

Classification of Portion of the Wellington–Napier via Wairarapa Main Highway.
IN pursuance and exercise of the powers conferred on me by the Transport Department Act, 1929, and the Motor-lorry Regulations, 1927, and their amendments, I, William Andrew Veitch, Minister of Transport, do hereby declare that the classification of the Wellington–Napier via Wairarapa Main Highway from Akatarawa Junction to the western boundary of the Borough of Featherston is hereby altered from second-class to third-class, available for the use thereon of any motor-lorry (other than a multi-axled motor-lorry) which with the load it is carrying weighs not more than 6½ tons, or any multi-axled motor-lorry which with the load it is carrying weighs not more than 8 tons.

WHEREAS notice was published in the Gazette of the 13th March, 1930, that the Native Minister has decided to apply the provisions of subsection (3) of section 23 of the Native Land Amendment and Native Land Claims Adjustment Act, 1929, to Lot 99 N 3, Parish of Onewhero and other blocks of Native land, or land owned by Natives, in the Waikato-Maniapoto Native Land Court District: And whereas the Native Minister has now decided that the Native land or land owned by Natives set out in the Schedule hereto shall be subject to the provisions of subsection (3) of the said section 23, and shall be included in and form part of the Onewhero Development Scheme. Notice of the Native Minister’s intention is hereby given and published in accordance with the said subsection (3), which provides that no owner shall, except with the consent of the Native Minister, be entitled to exercise any rights of ownership in connection with the land affected so as to interfere with or obstruct the carrying-out of any works undertaken or to be undertaken under the said subsection (3).

Te Makarini Scholarships tenable at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay.
TWO scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition in the year 1931. One of these scholarships, to be called the Senior Makarini Scholarship, is open to all Maori boys under sixteen years of age at the end of the month next preceding the month of the examination. The other scholarship, to be called the Junior Makarini Scholarship, is open to Maori boys who have been in regular attendance at Native village schools and are under fourteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the month of the examination. The scholarships are open to Maori boys on the conditions set forth in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Appendix to the Regulations relating to Native Schools, except that for the Junior Scholarship the age limit is now fourteen years, and that for the senior examination the work required is that of Standard VI instead of Standard V. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 7th and 8th of December, 1931. Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Superintendent of Native and Island Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted so as to reach the Department not later than the 30th of September, 1931.
Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Director of Education, Wellington.
