Opening Crown and National-endowment Lands in Nelson Land District for Selection on Renewable Lease.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred on me by the Land Act, 1924, I, General Sir Charles Fergusson, Baronet, Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the Crown and national-endowment lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on renewable lease on Tuesday, the twelfth day of November, one thousand nine hundred and twenty-nine, at the rentals mentioned in the said Schedule; and I do also declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject to the provisions of the said Act.

SCHEDULE.

NELSON LAND DISTRICT.

CROWN LAND.—SECOND-CLASS LAND.

Murchison County.—Maruia Survey District.

(Exempt from Payment of Rent for a Period of Four Years.)

SECTION 1, Block XVI : Area, 599 acres. Capital value, £300. Half-yearly rent, £6.

Weighted with £40, value of improvements comprising felling and grassing, 80 chains fencing, partly dismantled three-roomed cottage, sheep-pens, and shed; payable in cash.

Property is situated in Lower Maruia Valley, five miles and a half from Paenga School and ten miles from post-office. Access from Murchison, twenty-one miles distant, by formed road—two to three miles being unmetalled. About 50 acres of flat land, remainder hillside, with soil of fair to poor quality resting on sandstone and granite formation. Most of section has been felled and burned, but is now in fern. Well watered. Altitude, 700 ft. to 2,600 ft. above sea-level.

Takaka County.—Totaranui Survey District.

(Exempt from Payment of Rent for a Period of Four Years.)

Section 23, Block IV : Area, 249 acres 2 roods. Capital value, £90. Half-yearly rent, £1 16s.

Weighted with £62 10s., value of improvements comprising 50 chains of fencing and good two-roomed iron whare (well lined); payable in cash.

Property is situated one-quarter mile from Awaroa—Takaka Road by pack-track, thence access is from Takaka by good road, nineteen miles distant. Approximately 85 acres have been felled and sown, but now in dense fern; balance of section is still in standing bush, comprising rimu, matai, totara, and beech, with a heavy undergrowth. Soil of fair quality resting on granite and clay formation. Well watered.

THIRD-CLASS LAND.

Waimea County.—Mount Arthur Survey District.

(Exempt from Payment of Rent for a Period of Four Years.)

Section 1, Block XI : Area, 539 acres. Capital value, £135. Half-yearly rent, £2 14s.

Weighted with £85, value of improvements comprising 80 acres of felling and grassing, 30 chains boundary fence, and hut; payable in cash.

Property is situated on the south side of the Pearse River, three miles from its mouth by pack-track; thence twenty-three miles by good road to Wakefield Railway-station. Section comprises steep hilly country, with fair to poor soil on limestone and granite formation. There are 80 acres in grass, 120 acres in fern; balance of section is in heavy bush, consisting of red and brown beech, with a dense undergrowth. Well watered. Altitude, 600 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.

Waimea County.—Tadmor Survey District.

(Exempt from Payment of Rent for a Period of Five Years.)

Section 6, Block VI : Area, 257 acres. Capital value, £65. Half-yearly rent, £1 6s.

Weighted with £15, value of improvements comprising felling and grassing and 30 chains of fencing; payable in cash.

Property is situated at the head waters of the Sherry River, three miles from Tui Railway-station by formed road in poor repair. All steep broken country with outcrops of granite rock. About 100 acres have been felled and grassed, but now in fern; balance of area poor beech bush. Well watered. Soil of very poor quality. Altitude rises to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.

Sections 3 and 4, Blocks VI: Area, 406 acres 2 roods 37 perches. Capital value, £150. Half-yearly rent, £3.

Weighted with £155, value of improvements comprising felling and grassing, 160 chains of fencing, and small three-roomed dwelling in poor condition. This amount is repayable either in cash or by a cash deposit of £5, the balance remaining on instalment mortgage to the Superintendent, State Advances Office.

Property is situated towards the head of the Sherry River, two miles from Tui Railway-station by formed road in poor repair. Whole area has been felled and sown, but is now covered with fern. Some small flats; balance undulating spurs. Soil of poor quality resting on granite formation. Well watered. Altitude rises to 1,500 ft. above sea-level.

NATIONAL-ENDOWMENT LAND.—THIRD-CLASS LAND.

Waimea County.—Tadmor Survey District.

(Exempt from Payment of Rent for a Period of Four Years.)

Section 28, Block X : Area, 494 acres. Capital value, £185. Half-yearly rent, £3 14s.

Property is situated one mile and a half from Kaka Railway-station, off the main Tadmor—Glenhope Road. Access poor from main road. All broken hilly country, covered with bush and fern. About 110 acres have been felled, but now in dense fern. Soil of poor quality generally. Chiefly beech bush, with a few scattered rimu trees. Well watered. Altitude, 1,500 ft. above sea-level.

Waimea County.—Wangapeka Survey District.

Section 28, Block VI : Area, 382 acres. Capital value, £95. Half-yearly rent, £1 18s.

Weighted with £50, value of improvements comprising 100 acres of grassing; payable in cash.

Property is situated at the head of the Skeet Valley, nine miles distant from main Motueka Valley Road. Good road to within two and a half miles of section, thence unformed road. Mostly steep broken spurs with approximately 150 acres of bush; balance open fern country with outcrops of granite, carrying a fair amount of rough grazing. Soil of poor quality. Forest consists of poor beech bush. Well watered. Altitude, high.

Takaka County.—Waitapu Survey District.

(Exempt from Payment of Rent for a Period of Five Years.)

Section 6, Block VIII : Area, 2,000 acres. Capital value, £500. Half-yearly rent, £10.

Weighted with £525, value of improvements consisting of 310 acres felling and grassing, 150 chains of fencing, sheep-yards, two-roomed whare (12 ft. by 20 ft. with loft, built of corrugated iron and lined with rimu). This sum is repayable either in cash or by a cash deposit of £25, the balance remaining on instalment mortgage to the Superintendent, State Advances Office.

Section is situated at the head of the Waikoropupu Stream in the Pu Pu Valley. Access is from Takaka by four miles and a quarter of dray-road and one mile and a quarter by four-foot track, both road and track being in good order. The land is hilly and broken, the best portion being steep limestone country and fair sheep country when cleared and grassed. About 310 acres have been felled and grassed, and although this clearing has gone back to fern in places, danthonia is rapidly gaining possession. Forest consists of good mixed bush. Well watered.
