Declaring Crown and National-endowment Lands in the Karamea Mining District, Nelson Land District, open for Disposal on Renewable Lease.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by section one hundred and fifty-four of the Land Act, 1924, it is enacted that the Governor-General, by Proclamation, may from time to time declare any Crown lands within any mining district not held under lease or license, or for which a lease or license has been cancelled, to be open for disposal as provided in section one hundred and fifty-three of the said Act :

Now, therefore, I, General Sir Charles Fergusson, Baronet, Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, in exercise of the powers and authority conferred upon me by section one hundred and fifty-four of the said Act, and of every other power and authority in anywise enabling me in this behalf, do hereby proclaim and declare that the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open on Tuesday, the twelfth day of February, one thousand nine hundred and twenty-nine, for disposal on renewable lease, as provided in section one hundred and fifty-three of the said Act.

SCHEDULE.

NELSON LAND DISTRICT.—SECOND-CLASS LAND.

NATIONAL-ENDOWMENT LAND.

Takaka County.—Takaka Survey District.

(Exempt from Rent for Four Years after Payment of First Half-year’s Rent.)

SECTION 12, Block VI : Area 407 acres. Capital value, £340. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, £6 16s.

Situated on the dividing range between the Takaka and Waingaro Rivers, eight miles distant from Takaka by pack-track only. About 80 acres have been felled and sown. 120 acres in fern and second growth ; balance in birch bush. Soil of poor quality, resting on hard granite and limestone formation. Poorly watered.

Buller County.—Otumahana Survey District.

(Exempt from Rent for Four Years after Payment of First Half-year’s Rent.)

Section 9, Block V : Area, 386 acres. Capital value, £65. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, £1 6s.

Weighted with £45, for improvements consisting of felling and grassing, 60 chains fencing, two-roomed slab whare with iron roof and chimney ; payable in cash.

Situated eleven miles from Karamea by good road. School on property. Forty acres have been felled and grassed ; balance bush. Clearing has deteriorated, and is now in second growth, fern and rubbish. Well watered.

Buller County.—Brighton Survey District.

Section 10, Block V : Area, 351 acres. Capital value, £175. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, £3 10s.

Weighted with £216, for improvements consisting of a five-roomed dwelling, felling and grassing, and 40 chains of three-wire fencing. This amount may be taken over on mortgage to the Superintendent, State Advances Office.

Situated two miles south of Fox’s River on the sea-coast ; access from Westport twenty-eight miles, by formed road and five miles by horse-track. All hilly country, rough and broken. About 50 acres are in fair grass, 150 acres felled and grassed (now in second growth and rough feed) ; balance heavy bush. Soil fair to poor, on granite formation, with a strip of limestone running through. Well watered. Altitude rising to 1,100 ft. above sea-level.

Inangahua County.—Maimai Survey District.

Section 7, Block XVI : Area, 470 acres. Capital value, £165. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, £3 6s.

Weighted with £28 10s., for improvements consisting of 8 acres felled and grassed and 82 chains fencing. Payable in cash.

Situated in Little Grey Valley, three miles and a half from Maimai Railway-station, six miles and a half from school, by formed and metalled road. About 8 acres have been felled and grassed, 288 acres are open, pakihi land ; balance standing bush. Soil, poor to fair, resting on granite gravel formation. Bush consists of mixed beech with a few rimu and silver pine. Well watered. Altitude, 640 ft. to 700 ft. above sea-level.

CROWN LAND.

Collingwood County.—Waitapu Survey District.

(Exempt from Rent for Four Years after Payment of First Half-year’s Rent.)

Section 8, Block II : Area, 114 acres 0 roods 25 perches. Capital value, £30. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, 12s.

Weighted with £160, for improvements consisting of a five-roomed house (in poor condition), and 120 chains of fencing, valued at £160. This amount may be taken over on mortgage to the Superintendent, State Advances Office.

Situated in West Takaka, about one mile and a half from the main Takaka-Collingwood Road. Access is from Onekaka Ironworks, three-quarters of a mile distant by pack-track. Section comprises 5 acres light bush ; balance fern and manuka, and nearly all semi-pakihi land. Felling and grassing reverted to rubbish. Soil is of poor quality, resting on clay formation. Section is watered by stream.

Buller County.—Kongahu Survey District.

Section 19, Block III : Area, 644 acres. Capital value, £240. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, £4 16s.

Weighted with improvements comprising a three-roomed dwelling, valued at £45 ; payable in cash.

Situated in Glass Eye Creek, two miles from Little Wanganui by pack-track. The Little Wanganui River is fordable only at low tide. Access is poor, as pack-track is in very bad order. All steep, hilly country ; all bushclad with the exception of 100 acres old clearing, now gone back to fern and second growth. Soil fair to poor, resting on limestone and papa formation. Well watered. Altitude, 250 ft. to 1,400 ft. above sea-level.

Buller County.—Oparara Survey District.

Section 36, Block IX : Area, 45 acres 1 rood 34 perches. Capital value, £12. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, 4s. 10d.

Weighted with improvements consisting of 22 chains of fencing, valued at £5 10s. ; payable in cash.

Situated in the Karamea District on the Oparara Road, one mile and a quarter from Market Cross and butter factory. All poor pakihi flat terrace land. Originally cleared, but now in fern and second growth. Well watered. Altitude, 150 ft. above sea-level.

Buller County.—Oparara Survey District.

Section 37, Block IX : Area, 37 acres 2 roods 30 perches. Capital value, £10. Renewable lease : Half-yearly rent, 4s.

Weighted with improvements consisting of 22 chains of fencing, valued at £5 10s. ; payable in cash.

Situated in the Karamea District, on the Oparara Road, one mile and a quarter from Market Cross and butter factory. All flat terrace land which has been cleared at one time, but now gone back into second growth. The land is all pakihi, and of a very poor quality. Well watered. Altitude, 150 ft. above sea-level.

Special Condition pertaining to Lands in Takaka, Otumahana, and Waitapu Survey Districts as defined in the above Schedule.—After payment of first half-year’s rent has been made no further rent will be payable for a period of four years.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS the Scenery Preservation Board, constituted pursuant to the Scenery Preservation Act, 1908 (hereinafter referred to as “the said Act”), has recommended that the lands described in the Schedule hereto should be permanently reserved for scenic purposes, and it is expedient to give effect to such recommendation :

Now, therefore, I, General Sir Charles Fergusson, Baronet, Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers conferred by the said Act, do hereby proclaim and declare that the lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be scenic reserves under the said Act, and subject to the provisions thereof.

SCHEDULE.

NORTH AUCKLAND LAND DISTRICT.—KAI IWI LAKES SCENIC RESERVE.

SECTION 4, Block I, Kai-Iwi Survey District : Area, 100 acres, more or less.

Also Section 17, Block I, Kaihu Survey District : Area, 20 acres 3 roods, more or less.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, and issued under the Seal of that Dominion, this 15th day of December, 1928.
