struction at recognized technical classes occupying not less than three continuous years and not less than one hundred and fifty hours in each year; and (iii) he has served as an apprentice or pupil in some branch of the building trade or in the office of a registered architect for a period of not less than three years.

(4) He has been resident in New Zealand for one year immediately preceding the date of application for a bursary.

(5) He has been recommended by the Principal of a technical school or secondary school in New Zealand as being worthy of holding a bursary.

(6) He produces satisfactory evidence as to character and health.

(7) He has entered, by his parent or guardian or some other person approved by the Director, into a bond with His Majesty the King to repay to His Majesty the amount paid in allowances and fees in respect to his bursary in case he should fail to complete satisfactorily the prescribed course.

  1. An application for a bursary shall be made on the form provided, and shall be sent, together with the necessary certificates, so as to be received by the Director of Education, Wellington, on or before the 1st day of March in any year; and the applications must be supported by a recommendation from the Principal of the school attended.

The Director shall consider the applications for bursaries and award not more than three in each year to those applicants whom he considers are best qualified.

  1. The term of a bursary shall be three years, if the holder so long fulfils the prescribed conditions: Provided that, on the recommendation of the Professorial Board of the college attended, the Director may extend the term for one year longer.

  2. The holder of a bursary shall enter on the degree course at a school of architecture recognized by the University of New Zealand.

  3. The bursary must be held continuously, except in the case of illness or special circumstances approved by the Director.

  4. An Architectural Bursary shall not be tenable with a University Junior Scholarship, a University National Scholarship, a New Zealand University Bursary, or any other scholarship, exhibition, or bursary, or combination thereof, which may have been granted to the applicant for the purpose of providing free university education; nor shall an Architectural Bursary be held after the tenure of one of these scholarships or bursaries unless in special circumstances to be approved by the Director.

  5. (a) There shall be paid to or on behalf of each holder of a bursary the amount of the tuition fees payable by him in respect of the University course taken by him with the approval of the Director, provided that, except in special cases approved by the Director, not more than one year's fees shall be payable with respect to any subject at the same grade.

(b) If, in the opinion of the Director, the holder of a bursary is obliged to live away from his home or his usual place of residence in order to prosecute his studies he shall, in addition to the fees as aforesaid, receive an allowance at the rate of £50 per annum.

(c) To the holder of a bursary who lives at home, but is obliged to travel more than four miles each way in order to attend the classes, there may be paid the amount up to a maximum of £10 by which his actual and reasonable travelling-expenses exceed £4 per annum

  1. Unless on the report of the Chairman of the Professorial Board or of the Principal of the institution at which the bursary is held it is shown to the satisfaction of the Director of Education that the holder of a bursary has regularly attended the classes in the course approved for him as described in clause 4 hereof, has made satisfactory progress in the work of these classes, and has kept terms in the subjects and passed the University examinations (if any) required by the course, the bursary shall forthwith be determined, provided that the bursary may be continued if the Director is satisfied that any failure in attendance, diligence, or progress was due to illness or other sufficient cause. On such determination the holder shall, if the Director so requires, refund the fees and allowances already paid on his behalf.

  2. On receipt of an unfavourable report on the attendance, diligence, or progress of the holder of a bursary from the Chairman of the Professorial Board concerned, or the Principal of the institution at which the bursary is held, the Director of Education may at any time determine the tenure of the bursary, and require the holder thereof to refund the fees already paid on his behalf.
