Registers may be obtained at the office of a Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, or Dunedin.
Tests of wire rope.
- Wire ropes shall have been tested to the breaking-loads specified in Appendix II or III. Wire ropes shall have been further tested by twisting the individual wires round themselves at least eight times, then untwisting and straightening them. The wires must stand this test without breaking.
Test certificates shall be obtained by the purchaser for any wire rope to be used for working cargo: Provided that in the case where a long length of rope has been cut into lengths, the vendor or manufacturer may issue copies of the original test certificates accompanied by declarations that the same are true copies, but the vendor or manufacturer must hold the original certificate for reference for a period of five years.
The original test certificate must be duly signed by the person witnessing the test, and the person must be a responsible testing officer, such as the responsible testing officer of a licensed proving-house, a Board of Trade Surveyor, or a Surveyor of an approved classification society, or other duly qualified testing officer; or the testing officer of a manufacturer of wire ropes who has a testing-machine on his premises suitable for testing a sample of the completed rope.
The test certificate for wire ropes shall showβ(1) The name and address of the makers; (2) identifying letter or number on the rope; (3) length of rope to which certificate refers; (4) size of rope; (5) number of strands; (6) number of wires in each strand; (7) diameter of the wires; (8) particulars of the heart or core; (9) trade description of the material of which the wires are made; (10) lay of rope; (11) breaking-test of sample of rope; (12) name and address of testing establishment; (13) signature of person witnessing the test; (14) date of test; (15) name of person to whom rope has been supplied.
Wire rope to be inspected periodically.
- Every wire rope in general use for working cargo shall be inspected by a competent person once at least in every three months: Provided that after any wire has been broken in such rope it shall be inspected once at least in every month.
Wire rope with broken wires.
No wire rope shall be used for working cargo if in any length of eight diameters the total number of visible broken wires exceeds 10 per cent. of the total number of wires, or if the rope shows signs of excessive wear, corrosion, or other defect which, in the opinion of the person who inspects it, renders it unfit for the service intended.
Tests of fibre ropes.
- Fibre ropes shall have been tested to the breaking-loads specified in Appendix IV (1) or (2), according to their grade.
