Regulations governing the Importation of Seeds into New
South Wales.—Notice No. Ag. 2620.

THE following regulations, governing the importation of
seeds into New South Wales, are published for general
information.

REGULATIONS.

AGRICULTURAL SEEDS ACT, 1921.

His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive
Council, has been pleased to repeal all regulations previously
made under the provisions of the Agricultural Seeds Act,
1921, and to make the following regulations in lieu thereof.

REGULATIONS.

  1. The seeds of the plants mentioned in Schedule A shall
    be deemed to be noxious weed seeds.

  2. The name of an agricultural seed, as indicated by the
    statement or label which, in pursuance of section four of the
    Agricultural Seeds Act, 1921, is written on or attached to
    the parcel containing such seed, shall be the common name
    of such seed : Provided that the names of seeds of the plants
    whose botanical name is shown in Schedule B shall be indicated
    by the corresponding common names as set out in such
    Schedule.

  3. Agricultural seeds may have mixed with them not more
    than a total number of seventy-five seeds of the various
    classes mentioned in Schedule C to every ounce of agricultural
    seed, but the total number of weed seeds present shall not
    exceed 2 per cent. by count : Provided that any agricultural
    seed mentioned in Schedule D may, in addition to the above,
    have mixed with it weed seeds of the variety or varieties set
    out opposite such agricultural seed in such Schedule, and in
    a percentage not greater than that specified therein.

  4. The proportion of impurities permitted with agricultural
    seeds, and the minimum percentage of germination, shall be
    as indicated in Schedule E.

  5. Lucerne seed other than that grown in Australia shall,
    before being sold, be treated in the manner following : Not less
    than 5 per cent. of such seed shall be stained by immersion
    in an aqueous solution of safranin made by the addition of
    not less than 1 ounce of safranin to 7 gallons of water, and
    such stained seed shall thereafter be thoroughly mixed with
    the unstained portion of the seed : Provided that such treat-
    ment shall not be necessary if such seed has been treated
    in accordance with any Proclamation in force for the time
    being under the Customs Act, 1901–23.

  6. The label attached to the parts of a sample taken by
    an Inspector or person authorized by the Minister shall con-
    tain the following particulars :—
    (a.) Name of seed.
    (b.) Distinguishing trade-mark, if any.
    (c.) Name of vendor.
    (d.) Date on which sample is taken.
    (e.) Signature of person taking the sample.
