Alterations to Scale of Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.
IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me under the Government Railways Act, 1926, and of all other powers enabling me in this behalf, I, Francis Joseph Rolleston, Acting Minister of Railways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of charges in force on the New Zealand Government Railways open for traffic made on the 10th day of August, 1925, and published in the Gazette of the 11th August, 1925, and I do hereby declare that such alterations shall come into force on the 25th day of October, 1926.
PART I.—PASSENGERS.
- Reserved Seats.
By omitting the following :—

Passengers travelling first or second class by mail or express trains running between Wellington (Thorndon) and Auckland, Auckland and Whangarei (or Opua), Auckland and Rotorua, Wellington (Thorndon) and New Plymouth, Wellington (Thorndon) and Napier, Christchurch and Greymouth, Christchurch and Dunedin and Invercargill, and holding tickets for a journey of not less than 100 miles to be made by such trains, may, if they so desire, reserve seats for the journey on production of their tickets and payment of a charge of 9d. for each seat so reserved.

Any passenger intending to join a train for a journey in respect of which seats may be reserved at a station other than Wellington (Thorndon), Auckland, Whangarei (or Opua), Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier, Greymouth, Christchurch, Culverden (or Waiau), Dunedin, Cromwell, or Invercargill, and who desires to reserve a seat, must apply for such reservation to a Stationmaster, and on presentation of his ticket for the journey and payment of a fee of 9d. for such reservation together with a telegraphing fee of 9d., application will be made for the reservation, but no guarantee will be given that a seat will then be available for reservation.
And substituting the following :—

In the case of an application for a reserved seat made by telegram no guarantee will be given that a seat will be available for reservation.
PART III.—GOODS.
By omitting from Regulation 6 the following :—
- For each loading or unloading performed by the Department 4d. per bale for undumped and 8d. per bale for double-dumped will be charged; when the goods are tallied but not handled by the Department 4d. per bale (dumped or undumped) will be charged.
And substituting the following :—
- For each loading or unloading performed by the Department 4d. per bale for undumped and 8d. per bale for double-dumped will be charged, and these charges shall include the service of tallying when such is performed in connection with either the loading or unloading. When it is desired by either consignors or consignees that the Department should tally but not handle the goods 1½d. per bale (dumped or undumped) will be charged for each such service performed by the Department.
By adding to paragraph 6 of Regulation 8 the following :—
The Department may decline to extend the benefit of this reduced rate to consignments of pigs consigned to any person or firm utilizing other means of transport than the railway for the carriage of bacon, hams, and other products manufactured from such pigs when the railway is available for the transport of these goods.
PART IV.—GOODS : LOCAL RATES.
PICON SECTION.
By omitting the following :—
Through Booking of Wool and Binder Twine.
Wool in bales, undumped, booked through by rail and steamer from Blenheim via Picton and Lyttelton to Woolston, Christchurch, or Addington, will be charged 8s. 9d. per bale, including all charges at forwarding and destination stations and at Picton and Lyttelton, and steamer freight by the vessels of shipping companies approved by the Department.

Scheme of Control of Hutt Valley High School.

IN accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, 1914, and with the powers thereunder, I, Robert Alexander Wright, Minister of Education, do hereby approve of the amendments set out in the Schedule hereto in the scheme of control of the Hutt Valley High School.

SCHEDULE.
CLAUSE 5 (2) is hereby amended by deleting the word “ second,” and substituting therefor the word “ third.”
Clause 4 (11) (d) is hereby amended by deleting the word “ sixth,” and substituting therefor the word “ third.”

AT the examination of candidates for a surveyor’s license held in September, 1926, under the Surveyors’ Institute and Board of Examiners Act, 1908, and conducted by the Federated Surveyors’ Boards of Australia and New Zealand, thirty candidates presented themselves in New Zealand to complete their examinations.
