Notice to Mariners No. 48 of 1925.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, the Hydrographic Office, Washington, and the Secretary, Department of Navigation, Sydney, are published for general information.

[TEMPORARY.]
ENGLAND, EAST COAST.—THE DOWNS.
West Goodwin Boy.—Alteration in Position; Caution.
New Position.—At a distance of 2·5 cables 270° from charted position. Lat. 51° 15' N., long. 1° 28' E. (approx.). Description.—A black conical buoy.
Caution.—The above alteration has been rendered necessary owing to the extension of the Goodwin Sands to the westward. The buoy now lies in a depth of about 31 ft. (9m4). It is believed that extensive shoaling has taken place in the above locality. Mariners are warned accordingly.
Remarks.—The area will be examined as soon as possible, and further notice will be given for the necessary correction of the charts.

IRELAND, SOUTH-EAST COAST.
Barrels Light-vessel.—Intended Alteration in Fog-signal.
Date of Alteration.—On or about 1st June, 1925.
Position.—Lat. 52° 07' N., long. 6° 24' W. (approx.).
Details.—The fog-horn will be replaced by a fog-diaphone, sounding a group of four blasts every ninety seconds, thus : Blast 1 sec., silent 1 sec.; blast 1 sec., silent 1 sec.; blast 1 sec., silent 1 sec.; blast 1 sec., silent 83 sec.
Remarks.—In the event of the fog-diaphone being out of action, a fog-horn will sound a similar signal.
Further notice will be given.
ARGENTINA—RIO DE LA PLATA ENTRANCE.
Recalada Practicos Light-vessel.—Information re Vessel, Fog-signal, and Pilots.
(a.) Vessel :
Position.—Lat. 35° 10’ S., long. 56° 18' W. (approx.). Details.—“ Recalada ” light-vessel has been replaced by a light-vessel with three masts, painted in red and black bands on hull and light tower, and “ RECALADA PRACTICOS ” on the sides.
Remarks.—The character of the light is unaltered. The abridged description of the light on chart No. 1749 is to be amended to the new style as follows :—Fl. ev. 8 sec. 57 ft. 13 M.
(b.) Fog-signal :
Position.—At the above light-vessel.
Abridged Description.—Bell and S.F.B. (2) ev. 20 sec.
Alteration.—The fog-siren has been replaced by a fog-bell and a submarine fog-bell, both of which sound two strokes every twenty seconds.
(c.) Pilots :
Position.—At the above light-vessel.
Details.—The vessel marked “ Pilots,” shown on chart No. 1749, at a distance of about 2 miles westward of (a), is to be expunged. The note “ (Sig. Stn.) (Pilots) ” is now to be inserted against “ Recalada Practicos ” light-vessel on chart No. 1749.
CALIFORNIA.
(1269.) San Diego Bay.—Outside Bar Gas Buoy 3SD.—Period of Light to be changed.
About 1st May, 1925, the light on Outside Bar Gas Buoy 3SD will be changed to show flashing white every 3 seconds, flash 0·3 second, eclipse 2·7 seconds, without other change.
Approximate position : 32° 40' N., 117° 14' W.

(1271.) Sea-coast.—Point Loma Light Station.—Light improved and changed.
On 1st April, 1925, the luminous power of Point Loma Light was increased to 200,000 candles. The light was changed to show flashing white every 15 seconds, flash 1·5 seconds, eclipse 13·5 seconds.
Approximate position : 32° 39' 55" N., 117° 14' 32" W.

(1273.) Sea-coast.—Point Hueneme Light Station.—Light improved and changed.
On 1st April, 1925, the luminous power of Point Hueneme Light was increased to 120,000 candles. The light was changed to show flashing white every 5 seconds, flash 0·5 second, eclipse 4·5 seconds.
Approximate position : 34° 08' 45" N., 119° 12' 34" W.

(1464.) Sea-coast.—Point Vincente.—Fog-signal to be established.
About 1st June, 1925, a chime whistle, operated by compressed air, sounding 2 blasts every 60 seconds, thus, blast 1 second, silent 2 seconds, blast 4 seconds, silent 53 seconds, will be established on the south-western point of Point Vincente.
Approximate position : 33° 44' 30" N., 118° 24' 37" W.

CHINA SEA.—SINGAPORE ROAD.
Inner South Mole Lights.—Alterations in Characteristics.
(a.) Position.—At northern end of Inner South mole. Lat. 1° 17' N., long. 103° 52' E. (approx.).
Abridged Description.—Fl. R. ev. 5 sec. 33 ft., 10 M. (U).
Details.—The two fixed red lights have been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics :—
Character.—Flashing red every five seconds, thus : Flash 0·5 sec., eclipse 4·5 sec.
Elevation.—33 ft. (10m1). Visibility.—10 miles.
Structure.—Red tower, 24 ft. (7m3) in height.
(b.) Position.—At southern end of Inner South mole.
Abridged Description.—Fl. G. ev. 5 sec. 33 ft. 10 M. (U).
Details.—The two fixed green lights have been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics :— Character.—Flashing green every five seconds, thus : Flash 0·5 sec., eclipse 4·5 sec.
Elevation.—33 ft. (10m1). Visibility.—10 miles.
Structure.—Green tower, 24 ft. (7m3) in height.
Note.—The lights are unwatched.

INDIA, WEST COAST.—DELTA OF THE INDUS.
Kediwari (Turshian) Mouth.—Light-vessel to be established south-westward of.
Date of Establishment.—On or about 20th April, 1925.
Position.—At a distance of about fourteen miles south-westward of Hajamro beacon. Lat. 23° 56' 50" N., long. 67° 08' 50" E., on chart No. 41.
Details.—A light-vessel named “ SINDHI ” will be established in the above position.
Remarks.—Further notice will be given when particulars of the light and vessel are available.
NEW SOUTH WALES.
Alteration of Tide and Bar Signals.
Shipmasters and others are hereby notified that, on or about the 1st July, 1925, a different system of tide and bar signals will be introduced at the Port of Newcastle, which it is proposed shall be uniform for Australian ports.
Pending amendment of the Sailing Directions, copies of these new signals will be issued free to shipowners and ship-masters trading to Newcastle.
Notice to Mariners No. 49 of 1925.
NEW ZEALAND.—SOUTH ISLAND.—FOVEAUX STRAIT.—BLUFF HARBOUR.
Obstruction reported to exist.
THE Bluff Harbour Board reports that a group of boulders having a minimum depth of 20 ft. at M.L.W.S. exists between 60 ft and 70 ft. southward of the Main Channel Leading Beacons in transit in the following position :—
287°, 870 ft. from No. 1 red beacon, and 154·3°, 815 ft. from No. 2 red beacon.
Attention of mariners is drawn to Notices to Mariners Nos. 36, 42, and 43, of this year, which contain information relating to other obstructions reported to exist in this locality.
Publications affected : Admiralty Plan No. 3484 ; “ New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, pages 466 and 469 ; “ New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” twenty-third edition, 1925, pages 270 and 271, and plan facing page 274.
