Appointing Saturday as the Statutory Closing-day in the Borough of Masterton.

WHEREAS a poll to determine the statutory closing-day in the Borough of Masterton was duly taken under the authority of section 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, on the 29th day of April, 1925:

And whereas the Town Clerk of the Borough of Masterton has notified me that the majority of the votes given at such poll were in favour of the appointment of Saturday as the statutory closing-day in the said borough:

Now, therefore, I, George James Anderson, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, do hereby appoint Saturday as the statutory closing-day in the said borough as from the 1st day of June, 1925.

Appointing Thursday as the Statutory Closing-day in the Borough of Gisborne.

WHEREAS a poll to determine the statutory closing day in the Borough of Gisborne was duly taken under the authority of section 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, on the 29th day of April, 1925:

And whereas the Mayor of the Borough of Gisborne has notified me that the majority of the votes given at such poll were in favour of the appointment of Thursday as the statutory closing-day in the said borough:

Now, therefore, I, George James Anderson, Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, do hereby appoint Thursday as the statutory closing-day in the said borough as from the 1st day of June, 1925.

Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, prohibiting the Sale in the Borough of Palmerston North of certain Goods comprised in the Trade of a Tobacconist.

WHEREAS a petition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the tobacconists’ shops within the Borough of Palmerston North has been forwarded to me desiring that the sale of certain goods comprised in the trade of a tobacconist—namely, cigarettes, tobaccos, and cigars—be prohibited during such time as the said shops are required to be closed in pursuance of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22.

And whereas I, George James Anderson, Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the sale of the said goods is comprised in the trade of a tobacconist in the said district, and that the signatures to such petition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops in the said district:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 33 of the said Act, I do hereby direct that on and after the 8th day of June, 1925, the sale of the said goods in the Borough of Palmerston North shall be and is hereby prohibited as follows:—On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays after the hour of 6.30 p.m., on Wednesdays after the hour of 1 p.m., and on Saturdays after the hour of 10 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) During Spring Show week, and from the 23rd to the 31st December inclusive, the sale of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 10 p.m.; (2) On the eve of any special holiday—namely, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, the birthday of the reigning Sovereign, and any day which, pursuant to Proclamation by the Governor-General or declaration by the Government, or on request of the Mayor or Chairman of the local authority, is generally observed as a public holiday or half-holiday, the sale of the said goods is prohibited after the hour of 8.30 p.m.

Cancellation of Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, fixing the Closing-hours of Drapers’ Shops in the City of Nelson.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the drapers’ shops in the City of Nelson, has been forwarded to me, desiring that the notice gazetted on the 15th November, 1923, fixing the closing-hours of drapers’ shops in the said city be cancelled:

And whereas I, George James Anderson, Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops in the said City:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, I do hereby direct that the notice gazetted on the 15th November, 1923, fixing the closing-hours of drapers’ shops in the City of Nelson shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date hereof.

Cancellation of Notices under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, fixing the Closing-hours of Boot-dealers’ Shops in the City of Nelson.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the boot-dealers’ shops in the City of Nelson, has been forwarded to me, desiring that the notices gazetted on the 12th March, 1908, and the 11th March, 1909, fixing the closing hours of (1) boot and shoe importers’ and bootmakers’, and (2) bootmakers’, boot-importers’, and boot-salesmen’s shops in the said city be cancelled:

And whereas I, George James Anderson, Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops in the said city:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, I do hereby direct that the notices gazetted on the 12th March, 1908, and the 11th March, 1909, fixing the closing-hours of (1) boot and shoe importers’ and bootmakers’, and (2) bootmakers’, boot-importers’, and boot-salesmen’s shops in the City of Nelson, shall be and are hereby cancelled as from the date hereof.

And whereas I, George James Anderson, Minister of Labour, am satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops in the said city:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, I do hereby direct that the notice gazetted on the 15th November, 1923, fixing the closing-hours of clothiers’ shops in the City of Nelson, shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date hereof.

Te Makarini Scholarships tenable at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay.

TWO scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition in the year 1925. One of these scholarships, to be called the Senior Makarini Scholarship, is open to all Maori boys under sixteen years of age at the end of the month next preceding the month of the examination. The other scholarship, to be called the Junior Makarini Scholarship, is open to Maori boys who have been in regular attendance at Native village schools and are under fourteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the month of the examination. The scholarships are open to Maori boys on the conditions set forth in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Appendix to the Regulations relating to Native Schools, except that for the Junior Scholarship the age limit is now fourteen years, and that for the senior examination the work required is that of Standard VI instead of Standard V. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 7th and 8th of December.

Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers, send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education Department, Wellington, of their intention to present themselves for examination. Such notice must be posted so as to reach the Department not later than the 30th of September, 1925.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding institutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Director of Education, Wellington.
