Description.—This coral shoal, the centre of which has been found to be situated in the above position, is about 9 cables in length in easterly and westerly direction and about 5 cables in breadth. The least depth is only 2 ft. (0m6), instead of 1½ fathoms (2m7) as formerly shown.

Remarks.—The limits of the shoal are to be indicated by a danger line. The two depths of 9 fathoms (16m5) formerly shown within this area are to be expunged and the symbol for a rock with a depth of less than 6 ft. (1m8) substituted in each case.

(b.) Merkara shoal :

Position.—At a distance of about three-quarters of a mile eastward of charted position. Lat. 10° 30′ 20″ S., long. 141° 13′ 00″ E.

Description.—A coral shoal with a depth of 3¾ fathoms (6m9) instead of 3 fathoms (5m5) as formerly shown. The shoal is about 4½ cables in length in an easterly and westerly direction and about 3 cables in breadth.

NOTE.—The positions given refer to chart No. 2354. The note Proudfoot shoal, Cook Reef, and adjacent soundings are from a survey by Captain Denham, H.M.S. “Herald,” 1860, hitherto shown near the margin of chart No. 2354, southward of the foregoing shoals, is now to be expunged.

JAVA, EAST COAST.—BALI STRAIT.

Banyuwangi Light.—Alteration in Character.

Former Notice.—No. 1038 of 1924.

Position.—Close eastward of Port office. Lat. 8° 13′ S., long. 114° 23′ E. (approx.).

Abridged Description.—Fl. ev. 15 sec., 43 ft., 12 M.

Alteration.—The group-occulting white light, quoted in former notice, has been replaced by a flashing white light every fifteen seconds.

JAVA, NORTH COAST.

Inderamayu Point.—Shoal westward of ; Alteration in Position of Buoy.

(a.) Shoal :

Position.—At a distance of about 4 miles westward of Inderamayu Point. Lat. 6° 13′ 40″ S., long. 108° 14′ 00″ E., on chart No. 1653.

Depth.—1¼ fathoms (2m3).

Remarks.—The 3¾ fathom (6m9) depth shown close south-westward of this position on chart No. 1653, is to be expunged.

(b.) Buoy :

New Position.—Close westward of former position and now marking the north-western side of above shoal.

Description.—A black conical buoy with ball topmark.

Remarks.—On some copies of the charts this buoy was shown as being formerly situated about one mile south-westward of the above position.

Madura Strait.—Gili Gilingan—Light established.

Position.—At a distance of one cable 057° from the western extreme of Gili Gilingan. Lat. 7° 15′ S., long., 113° 44′ E. (approx.).

Abridged Description.—Fl. ev. 20 sec., 58 ft., 12 M.

Characteristics :

Character.—Flashing white every twenty seconds, thus: Flash 5 sec., eclipse 15 sec.

Elevation.—58 ft. (17m7). Visibility.—12 miles.

Power.—200 candles.

Structure.—White beacon, 33 ft. (10m1) in height.

SOUTHERN INDIAN OCEAN.

Existence of Icebergs.

(Positions are approximate unless given in seconds.)

Positions.—(1.) Lat. 43° 38′ south, long. 25° 20′ east. (2.) Lat. 43° 58′ south, long., 35° 02′ east.

Information has been received that icebergs, eight in No. 1 position, and two in No. 2 position, were observed on 7th January, 1925, their lengths varying from 300 ft. to 1,500 ft., and height from 50 ft. to 150 ft.


Notice to Mariners No. 27 of 1925.

NEW ZEALAND.—NORTH ISLAND.—EAST COAST.—TOLAGA BAY.

Existence of Reported Rock not verified.

REFERRING to Notice No. 3 of 24th January, 1925, concerning information which had been received of the existence of a sunken rock off the southern entrance point to Tolaga Bay :

This rock has been searched for by Captain Bollons of the Government Lighthouse Steamer “Tutanekai” without success, and it is assumed that the bearings supplied in the original information were inaccurately given.

In the meantime mariners are cautioned to give the southern side of the entrance to Tolaga Bay a wide berth until further information has been obtained or until a further investigation of the locality has been made.

When this has been done further information will be promptly published.

INFORMATION is hereby given that exhibition of the white light which has occasionally been shown by the residents of the farmhouse at Totaranui Bay will be discontinued without further notice.

Notice to Mariners No. 29 of 1925.

NEW ZEALAND.—NORTH ISLAND.—AUCKLAND HARBOUR.

Dredgers operating.

THE Auckland Harbour Board notify that dredgers are now operating in the undermentioned localities :—

Dredger “Hapai” : At an approximate position 750 ft. 290° from the north-western corner of Prince’s Wharf.

Dredger 121 : At an approximate position 100 ft. eastward of the inner berth of the eastern side of King’s Wharf.

Both dredgers are moored cardinally, and care to avoid the dredgers and their moorings should be exercised when navigating in their vicinity.

NOTICE is hereby given that the lease of the undermentioned land having been declared forfeited by resolution of the Wellington Land Board, the said land has thereby reverted to the Crown under provisions of the Land Act, 1924, and the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, 1915.
