THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, are published for general information.

[PRELIMINARY.]

ENGLAND, WEST COAST.—BRISTOL CHANNEL.

Lundy Island South Light.—Intended Alteration in Period.

Date of Alteration.—On or about 28th January, 1925.

Position.—On south-eastern end of the island. Lat. 51° 10′ N., long. 4° 39′ W. (approx.).

Alteration.—The period of this flashing white light will be altered from one minute to thirty seconds.

Remarks.—Further notice will be given.

NOTE.—This light is at present shown as a revolving light on some copies of the charts.

[PRELIMINARY.]

IRELAND, SOUTH-WEST COAST.—DINGLE BAY APPROACH.

Inishtearaght Lighthouse.—Fog-signal to be established.

Date.—On or about 1st January, 1925.

Position.—From the balcony of the lighthouse. Lat. 52° 05′ N., long. 10° 40′ W. (approx.).

Description.—A fog diaphone sounding one blast every thirty seconds, thus: Blast 2·5 sec., silent 27·5 sec.

Remarks.—Further notice will be given.

IRELAND.—NORTH-EAST COAST.

Rathlin Island West Lighthouse.—Fog-signal to be established.

Date of Establishment.—Shortly.

Position.—On western end of the island. Lat. 55° 18′ N., long. 6° 17′ W. (approx.).

Description.—A fog diaphone sounding a group of four blasts every minute, thus: Blast 1·5 sec., silent 2·5 sec.; blast 1·5 sec., silent 2·5 sec.; blast 1·5 sec., silent 2·5 sec.; blast 1·5 sec., silent 46·5 sec.

Remarks.—Further notice will be given.

[TEMPORARY.]

UNITED STATES, ATLANTIC COAST.—LONG ISLAND.

Amagansett D/F Station temporarily closed.

Position.—Lat. 40° 58′ N., long. 72° 07′ W. (approx.).

Details.—The above D/F station has been closed for an indefinite period, owing to damage by fire.

BRAZIL, SOUTH-EAST COAST.—SANTA CATHARINA ISLAND.

Punta dos Naufragados Light.—Alteration in Character.

Position.—On south-western end of the island. Lat. 27° 50′ S., long. 48° 35′ W. (approx.).

Abridged Description.—Gp. fl. (2) ev. 15 sec. 136 ft. 17 M. (U).

Alteration.—The character of the light has been altered from flashing white to group-flashing white, showing two flashes every fifteen seconds, thus: Flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 3·7 sec.; flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 10·7 sec.

Remarks.—The visibility of the light is now 17 miles.

The light is unwatched; in other respects the light is unaltered.

ARGENTINA.—TIERRA DEL FUEGO, STATEN ISLAND.

New Year Islands Light.—Intended Alteration in Character.

Date of Alteration.—Shortly.

Position.—On eastern side of Observatory Island. Lat. 54° 39′ S., long. 64° 07′ W. (approx.).

Alteration.—The character of the light will be altered from flashing white to group-flashing white, showing three flashes every twenty seconds.

Remarks.—Further notice will be given.

CENTRAL AMERICA.—PANAMA, PACIFIC COAST.

Puercos Point.—Shoal reported eastward of.

Position.—At a distance of about 3 miles eastward of Puercos Point (Morro Puercos). Lat. 7° 14′ 00″ N., long. 80° 22′ 45″ W., on chart No. 2267.

Details.—This position is to be enclosed by a circular danger-line on the charts, and marked “Shoal Repd. (1924).”

Remarks.—The 10 fathom (18m3) and 12 fathom (21m9) depths shown close to this position on charts Nos. 2267 and 2145, respectively, are to be expunged.

Patentito Islet.—Light established.

Position.—In centre of islet, at a distance of 2·8 cables 315° from western extremity of Punta Patena. Lat. 8° 16′ N., long. 78° 18′ W. (approx.).

Abridged description.—Fl. ev. 3 sec. 12 M.

Characteristics:—

Character.—Flashing white every three seconds, thus: Flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 sec.

Visibility.—12 miles.

Structure.—Square concrete structure.

Remarks.—The left hand margin of the continuation is to be opened out for a distance of about one mile on each side of Punta Patena, in order to admit the insertion of Patenito Islet and light. This islet, which is about 4 cables in length in a north-westerly and south-easterly direction, is to be marked “Patenito I.” on the continuation.

Boca Chica.—Light established.

Position.—On Virago Point in the approach to Darien Harbour, at a distance of about 3·0 cables 154° from Trevan Islet (centre). Lat. 8° 26′ N., long. 78° 09′ W. (approx.).

Abridged description.—Fl. ev. 3 sec. 12 M.

Characteristics:—

Character.—Flashing white every three seconds, thus: Flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 sec.

Visibility.—12 miles.

Structure.—Square concrete structure.

NOTE.—The notation “(P.A.)” is to be inserted against this light on the plan and continuation.

[TEMPORARY.]

UNITED STATES, PACIFIC COAST.—CALIFORNIA AND OREGON

(1.) Point Loma D/F Station not in operation.

Former Notice.—No. 372 of 1924 [TEMPORARY]; hereby cancelled.

Position.—Lat. 32° 42′ N., long. 117° 15′ W. (approx.).

Details.—Point Loma D/F station is temporarily closed.

(2.) Empire D/F Station reopened.

Position.—Lat. 43° 23′ N., long. 124° 19′ W. (approx.).

Call signal.—NPF.

Details.—Empire D/F station has now been re-established.

UNITED STATES, PACIFIC COAST.—CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO HARBOUR APPROACH.

Farallon Light.—Alteration in Character.

Position.—On South Farallon Islet. Lat. 37° 42′ N., long. 123° 00′ W. (approx.).

Abridged Description.—Gp. fl. (3) ev. 30 sec. 358 ft. 26 M.

Alteration.—The character of the light has been altered from flashing white to group-flashing white showing three flashes every thirty seconds, thus: Flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 3·5 sec.; flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 3·5 sec.; flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 22·1 sec.

UNITED STATES, PACIFIC COAST.—CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO HARBOUR.

Bird Island.—D/F Station closed.

Former Notice.—No. 372 of 1924 [TEMPORARY].

Position.—Lat. 37° 49′ N., long. 122° 32′ W. (approx.).

Details.—The wireless direction-finding station on Bird Island, which has been closed, is to be expunged from the charts.

CANADA, BRITISH COLUMBIA.—VANCOUVER ISLAND, VICTORIA HARBOUR ENTRANCE.

Brotchie Ledge.—Information re Light; Fog-signal discontinued.

Position.—Brotchie Ledge Lighthouse, lat. 48° 24′ N., long. 123° 23′ W. (approx.).

(1.) Information re light:

Abridged description.—(U) Occ. 22 ft. 9 M.

Details.—The occulting white light every fifteen seconds has been replaced by an occulting white light at short intervals, but the actual period is not stated.

NOTE.—The note “(unreliable)” against this light is to be expunged from the charts.

(2.) Fog-signal discontinued: Description.—A fog-bell.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.—FIJI ISLANDS.

Round Island Passage.—Breakers reported north-eastward of.

Position.—At a distance of about 27 miles north-eastward of southern side of Round Island passage entrance. Lat. 16° 15′ 30″ S., long. 177° 51′ 00″ E. (approx.), on chart No. 2691.

Details.—The above position is to be encircled by a danger-line on the charts, and marked “Breakers repd. (P.A.) (1924).”

Remarks.—These breakers are reported by s.s. “El Kantara,”
