may, if he is shown to the satisfaction of the Director of Education to possess special merit, be paid by way of addition to the salary payable under clause 3 of the regulations as amended such amount not exceeding £15 per annum as the Minister of Education shall determine.”

(b.) By revoking Schedule V, and substituting—

“NOTES.—The Roman numbers I, II, &c., in the first column are the grades of head or sole teachers: Arabic numbers are the grades of assistants, male or female.

“The salaries of head or sole teachers shown in the second column are those of married teachers as reduced by the Public Expenditure Adjustment Act, 1921.”

  1. The following new clause is added :—

“6. The salary of a teacher shall be paid from the date he enters upon his duties until the date on which his duties cease, including payment for holidays during his period of engagement, and for the period necessarily occupied in transferring from one school to another: Provided that a teacher commencing duties during the first week in February in any year may be paid from the 1st February; and provided further that a teacher who has been employed throughout a school year commencing 1st February, and whose engagement terminates at the beginning of or during the long midsummer school vacation, shall be entitled to receive salary until the end of such vacation or until 31st January, whichever is the earlier.”

  1. Clause 7 of the regulations is hereby revoked, and the following substituted therefor :—

“7. (1.) The Headmaster of a district high school shall receive by way of further addition to the salary provided by clauses 3 and 4 of the regulations as amended the sum shown in column (4) of Schedule III hereof.

“(2.) The salaries of the certificated assistant teachers in the secondary department of a district high school shall be the salaries of the grades (as defined by Schedule IV to clause 3) prescribed for the teachers in Schedule III.

“(3.) The salaries of the assistant teachers in the primary department of a district high school shall be the same as in a public school of the same grade as the primary department.”

  1. Clause 8 of the regulations is hereby amended by inserting, after the words “Chatham Islands,” the words ‘or other remote place.’

  2. Clause 9 of the regulations is hereby amended by substituting “£150” or “£170” in the proviso to subclause (1).

  3. Clause 13 of the regulations is hereby amended—

(a.) By adding to paragraph (c) of subclause one thereof the words

“Such increment being the amount necessary to bring the salary up to the next higher salary for the new position.”

(b.) By adding the following subclause :—

“(4.) For the purpose of this clause salary means the salary payable in accordance with clause 3 of the regulations as amended by this Order, but does not include the additional sums provided by the notes to Schedule IV.”

  1. Clause 14 of the regulations is hereby revoked, and the following substituted therefor :—

“14. Every teacher employed in any position in a public school shall, so long as he remains in that position and until he receives the maximum of his grade of salary, receive on the 1st February in each year the annual
