Stratford County.—Omona Survey District.
Section 5, Block VIII: Area, 760 acres. Capital value, £760. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £19. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £15 4s.
Situated at the junction of the Karewa and Ratanui Roads. Access from Eltham about twenty-seven miles distant by metalled road for twenty-two miles, formed dray-road two miles and a half, balance rough bridle-track. Access is also from Douglas Railway-station, about twelve miles distant, eight of which are metalled, balance rough horse-track. The section comprises small flats of good ground along the Ratanui Road, falling away steeply towards the back boundary by steep spurs and gullies. About 30 acres of bush have been felled but not burnt; balance is in heavy forest of rimu, tawa, rata, hinau, puketea, &c., and a dense undergrowth of mahoe, kotukutuku, raurekau, supplejacks, pongas, &c. Soil of good quality, on papa formation; well watered. Elevation, 800 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.
Section 6, Block VIII: Area, 236 acres. Capital value, £1,240. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £31. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £24 16s.
Situated on the Ratanui Road. Access is from Douglas Railway-station, which is about sixteen miles and a half distant by metalled road for about eight miles, part of the remaining distance being bridle-track and part bush-track now overgrown. Access is also from Eltham, twenty-nine miles distant—twenty-one miles metalled road, two miles and a half formed dray-road, balance track. The section comprises a few small flats along the road frontage, the remainder being steep country with gullies and gorgy creeks. Soil is of fair quality, resting principally on papa formation. The forest is heavy, comprising tawa, rimu, rata, puketea, tawhero, &c., with a dense undergrowth of mahoe, ferns, supplejacks, &c. Well watered by small streams. Elevation, 800 ft. to 1,800 ft. above sea-level.
Clifton County.—Upper Waitara Survey District.
Section 4, Block XII: Area, 794 acres. Capital value, £600. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £15. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £12.
Situated on the Marco and Mangaowata Roads. Access is from Whangamomona via Marco Road, which is about ten miles distant—by metalled dray-road four miles, unmetalled dray-road two miles, and 6 ft. track four miles. The Mangaowata Road is not formed. The section comprises steep country, suitable principally for grazing, with very little easy country and no good building-sites adjacent to the formed road. Soil is of good quality, on papa and sandstone formation. The forest is heavy, comprising rimu, tawa, kahikatea, rewarewa, puketea, &c., with a dense undergrowth of mahoe, raurekau, ferns, supplejacks, &c. Well watered by small streams. Elevation, 500 ft. to 1,100 ft. above sea-level.
Ohura County.—Waro Survey District.
Section 4, Block VII: Area, 265 acres. Capital value, £260. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £6 10s. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £5 4s.
Weighted with £150, valuation for improvements consisting of felling and fencing, payable in cash, or may be taken over by way of mortgage to the State Advances Superintendent.
Situated on the Waitaanga South and Tongaporutu-Mangaroa Roads. Access is from the Town of Ohura, fourteen miles distant—by dray-road for twelve miles, balance rough horse-track. The section comprises flat to easy undulating country, the level country being swampy in places. Soil is of poor quality, on clay and sandstone formation. The forest is heavy, comprising tawa, rimu, hinau, rata, miro, tawhero, &c., with a dense undergrowth of raurekau, houhou, &c. Well watered by small streams. Elevation ranges from 1,400 ft. to 1,450 ft. above sea-level.
Clifton County.—Waro Survey District.
Section 4, Block X: Area, 505 acres. Capital value, £260. Occupation with right of purchase: Half-yearly rent, £6 10s. Renewable lease: Half-yearly rent, £5 4s.
Weighted with £300, valuation for improvements consisting of felling, grassing, fencing, and iron whare; £65 payable in cash, balance may be taken over by way of mortgage to the State Advances Superintendent.
Situated on the Tongaporutu–Mangaroa Road about three miles and a half from Kotare Township, which is forty miles from Waitara. The access is from Waitara (through Uruti and Okau), which is about forty-three miles and a half distant by good metalled road to the top of Mount Messenger, balance unmetalled road. There is a daily coach service to and from Waitara to within thirteen miles and a half. The section comprises fairly easy country along road frontage (running back for an average of 3 chains), to steep ridges and bluffs. Back portion broken rough country. Soil is of fairly good quality, on papa and sandstone formation. The forest is medium to dense, comprising rimu, tawa, &c., with a thick undergrowth of supplejacks, &c. Fairly well watered by small streams. Elevation, 600 ft. to 1,200 ft. above sea-level.

Opening National-endowment Lands in Westland Land District for Selection on Renewable Lease.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the Land Act, 1908, I, John Rushworth, Viscount Jellicoe, Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby declare that the national-endowment lands described in the Schedule hereto shall be open for selection on renewable lease on Monday, the eighteenth day of September, one thousand nine hundred and twenty-two, at the rentals mentioned in the said Schedule; and I do also declare that the said lands shall be leased under and subject to the provisions of the said Act.

WESTLAND LAND DISTRICT.—NATIONAL ENDOWMENT.—SECOND-CLASS LAND.
Westland County.—Bruce Bay Survey District.
SECTION 2450, Block XIV: Area, 151 acres 1 rood; capital value, £80; half-yearly rent, £1 12s.
All heavy bush, consisting of red and white pine, birch, and miro, with undergrowth of punga; gentle slope to north-west; about 50 acres rough hillside; stony soil, of fair quality. Access by main South Road, about six miles from Bruce Bay Landing by Mahitahi River bed, and one mile and a half from Mahitahi Post and Telephone Office. Altitude at north-west corner, 230 ft. above sea-level.
Grey County.—Brunner Survey District.
Section 2897, Block V: Area, 913 acres; capital value, £690; half-yearly rent, £13 16s.
Comprises heavy bush land, carrying rimu, kamahi, miro, &c., from which most of the timber of commercial value has been removed, with a dense undergrowth of small kamahi, tanekaha, &c. Soil is fair to good, resting on gravel; well watered. Access by metalled dray-road one mile and a half and by metalled horse-track four miles and a half approximate from Kotuku Railway-station. Elevation ranges from 500 ft. to 850 ft. above sea-level.
Westland County.—Kanieri Survey District.
Section 3348, Block III: Area, 166 acres 2 roods; capital value, £170; half-yearly rent, £3 8s.
Level land, carrying rimu and kahikatea, practically worked out by sawmills, although some sawmilling timber left. Soil of fair quality, resting on gravel, wet in places; well watered by creeks. Access from Hokitika, about ten miles distant, and from Arahura Dairy Factory, about five miles distant, by good metalled dray-road. Arahura School is within, say, four miles. The section contains 24 acres of Crown land and 142 acres 2 roods of national endowment. Elevation, 150 ft. above sea-level.
Grey County.—Kopara Survey District.
Section 3206, Block VIII: Area, 153 acres; capital value, £120; half-yearly rent, £2 8s.
Comprises about 60 acres nigger-head swamp, very wet, but drainable, the remainder flat and terrace land covered with heavy bush, principally brown birch, carrying odd trees of miro and red-pine, also undergrowth of small scrub and birch scattered throughout the section. Land well watered by creeks. Soil fair in places, of a sandy nature, and good in swamp when drained. The section is situate between Haupiri River and Haupiri–Koparo Pack-track. Access from Ahaura by twenty-three miles of good metalled road, and then by three miles of pack and dray track across plain. Altitude ranges from 500 ft. to 600 ft. above sea-level.
Grey County.—Mawheraiti Survey District.
Section 3340, Block V: Area, 209 acres; capital value, £160; half-yearly rent, £3 4s.
Comprises a small area near creek of flat land, the remainder being flat terrace and sideling country covered with dense bush. Soil of fair quality near creek, but poor on terrace, covered with dense rimu, rata, miro, and birch, the last noted being the principal timber. There is a slight under-
