Naval Reserve Regulations




Relative Ratings.—The relative ratings of the seamen, signal, telegraphist, and stoker branches are,—

Seaman Branch : (i) Ordinary seaman, (ii) able seaman, (iii) leading seaman, (iv) petty officer, (v) chief petty officer.

Signal Branch : (i) Ordinary signalman, (ii) signalman, (iii) leading signalman, (iv) yeoman of signals, (v) chief yeoman of signals.

Telegraphist Branch : (i) Ordinary telegraphist, (ii) telegraphist, (iii) leading telegraphist, (iv) petty officer telegraphist, (v) chief petty officer telegraphist.

Stoker Branch : (i) Stoker 2nd class, (ii) stoker, (iii) leading stoker, (iv) stoker petty officer, (v) chief stoker.

Engine-room Artificers, Advancement of.—Engine-room artificers 4th class will be eligible for advancement to 3rd class upon obtaining R.N. stoke-hold and engine-room certificates. Further advancement will be governed by the same regulations as for the seagoing forces.

Motor Mechanics, Advancement of.—A motor mechanic may be advanced to chief motor mechanic as soon as he possesses the qualifications required for entry in that rating as laid down in paragraph 33, and is recommended by the commanding officer of the ship in which his training has been performed.

Electrical and Ordnance Artificers, Artisans, Writers, Victualling, and Sick-berth Ratings, Advancement of.—The advancement of the following ratings will be governed by the regulations applicable to the seagoing forces :—

Electrical artificers. Writers.
Ordnance artificers. Victualling ratings.
Artisans of all branches. Sick-berth ratings.

[NOTE.—In this paragraph and in paragraphs 34 and 42 shipwright artificers are included under artisans.]

  1. Motor Mechanics : Relative Rank.—A chief motor mechanic over two years' service will rank and receive pay as an engine-room artificer lst class ; a chief motor mechanic over one year's service will rank and receive pay as an engine-room artificer 2nd class ; a chief motor mechanic under one year's service will rank and receive pay as an engine-room artificer 3rd class. A motor mechanic will rank and receive pay as a stoker petty officer of four years' seniority.

IV. PERIOD OF TRAINING.

  1. The following will be the minimum periods of obligatory training required to be carried out. Men may volunteer to extend these periods or to come up for training at other than the scheduled times. All such applications will be dealt with on their merits with due regard to the interests of the service and of the individuals concerned.

Class A.

  1. Men in class A will be required to undergo fourteen days' training in H.M. ships every alternate year, commencing with the year of enrolment if there has been a break in their Naval service exceeding six months, otherwise commencing with the year following enrolment. They will not be required to undergo any compulsory training during the fifth period of enrolment.

Class B.

  1. Men in class B will be required to undergo the following periods of training in H.M. ships :—

Engine-room Artificers and Enginemen.—Fourteen days’ training annually during their first period of enrolment, or twenty-one days' training in each of the first, third, and fifth years; twenty-one days' training in all during each of the second, third, and fourth periods ; no compulsory training during the fifth period.

Engine-room artificers will be allowed to volunteer for a period of training not exceeding six months in each period of enrolment, in order to enable them to qualify for advancement. Subsequent periods of compulsory training during that term of enrolment may be waived when the period of voluntary training has exceeded three months.

Seamen and Stoker Ratings.—Twenty-eight days' training during each alternate year of service, commencing with the first (i.e., the odd years), until completion of third term of enrolment ; twenty-eight days' training in all during fourth term ; no compulsory training during fifth term. Except for the first year, when twenty-eight days' training must be undergone as soon as possible after enrolment, periods of fourteen days' training may be undergone every year in lieu of twenty-eight days every alternate year.
