SOUTH-WESTERN PACIFIC OCEAN.—REPORTED SHOAL.

THE master of the s.s. “Navua” has reported that while on a voyage from Fiji to Tonga he passed close to the charted position of the active submarine volcano in latitude 20° 50′ south, longitude 175° 33′ west (see Chart No. 2421). The light conditions being perfect and sea calm he distinctly observed a small patch of discoloured water which looked suspiciously like a shoal. He recommends masters to avoid this position till further investigation is made.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, and the Hydrographic Office, Washington, are published for general information.

AUSTRALIA.

QUEENSLAND.—TORRES STRAIT, WESTERN APPROACH.—SHOAL DEPTH TO BE INSERTED ON CHARTS.

Position.—At a distance of about 12½ miles westward from Booby Island light. Lat. 10° 35′ 12″ S., long. 141° 41′ 33″ E.
Depth.—5¾ fathoms (10·5 m.).

EAST COAST.—ADOLPHUS CHANNEL.—EBORAC ISLAND.—LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.

About 15th October, 1921, and without further notice, an unwatched group flashing light with white and red sectors will be established at an elevation of 127 ft. on a square concrete house with white lantern, the whole 22 ft. high, on the summit of Eborac Island. The light will show 2 flashes every 10 seconds—thus, flash 0·5 second, eclipse 1 second; flash 0·5 second, eclipse 8 seconds; and will be visible over sectors as follows:—

White from 135° to 279°, red elsewhere except where obscured by York Island. The light will show red through Albany Pass. The white light will be of 3,000 candle-power, visible 17 miles; the red light of 1,200 candle-power, visible 8 miles.

Approx. position: 10° 41′ S., 142° 32′ E.

TORRES STRAIT.—PRINCE OF WALES CHANNEL.—HAMMOND ROCK.—LIGHT TO BE ESTABLISHED.

About 31st October, 1921, and without further notice, an unwatched group flashing light with white and red sectors will be established on the summit (31 ft.) of Hammond Rock. The light will show 4 flashes every 20 seconds—thus, flash 0·5 second, eclipse 1 second; flash 0·5 second, eclipse 1 second; flash 0·5 second, eclipse 1 second; flash 0·5 second, eclipse 15 seconds; and will be elevated 40 ft. above the water. The white light will be of 1,500 candle-power and visible 11 miles; the red light of 600 candle-power and visible 7 miles. The structure is a white lantern 13 ft. high, mounted on the summit of the rock. The sectors are as follows: Red from the shore of Hammond Island to 63°, white from 63° to 260°, red from 260° to the shore of Hammond Island, obscured elsewhere.

Approx. position: 10° 31′ S., 142° 13′ E.

BRAMBLE CAY.—BEACON TO BE RE-ESTABLISHED.

About 31st October, 1921, and without further notice, a new beacon, consisting of a red frame tower 42 ft. high, will be erected near the centre of Bramble Cay to replace the old beacon destroyed in 1919.

Approx. position: 9° 8′ S., 143° 52′ E.

PACIFIC OCEAN.

FRIENDLY ISLANDS, TONGATABU.

(1.) Nukualofa Jetty Light.—Alteration in Characteristics.
Position.—Lat. 21° 8′ S., long. 175° 12′ W. (approx.).

New Abridged Description.—Lt. fl. ev. 3 secs., 18 ft., vis. 6 m.
Details.—The fixed white and red lights have been replaced by a light having the undermentioned characteristics:—
Character.—Flashing white every three seconds, thus: Flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 secs.
Elevation.—18 ft. (5·5 m.).
Visibility.—6 miles.

(2.) Malinoa Islet.—Light established.
Position.—Lat. 21° 2′ 10″ S., long. 175° 7′ 50″ W.
Abridged Description.—Lt. fl. ev. 3 secs., vis. 5 m.
Character.—Flashing white every three seconds, thus: Flash 0·3 sec., eclipse 2·7 secs.
Visibility.—5 miles.

EASTERN ARCHIPELAGO.

JAVA SEA.—NON-EXISTENCE OF REEFS.

(1.) Willem Island Reef: Position—lat. 6° 34′ S., long. 116° 42′ E. (approx.).
(2.) Bampton Bank: Position—lat. 4° 46′ S., long. 114° 49′ E. (approx.).
(3.) Arrogant Shoal: Position—lat. 5° 12′ S., long. 112° 57′ E. (approx.).
(4.) Position.—At a distance of about 9 miles westward of Arends Island. Lat. 5° 4′ S., long. 114° 25′ E. (approx.).
Remarks.—The above reefs do not exist, and are to be expunged from the charts.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 18th October, 1921.

THE following information has been received from the Auckland Harbour Board:—

(1.) Construction of Wharf.—Commencement has been made with construction of Princes Wharf. A pile-driver, which has moorings laid to the north-west, north, north-east, and east, is now operating immediately to the north of Hobson Wharf. The first piles are being driven immediately to the northward of the north-west corner of the present Hobson Wharf, and will continue in a northerly direction.

(2.) Dredger at Work.—The dredger No. 121 is now working off the north end of Northern Wharf, and has six moorings laid out cardinally.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Chart No. 1970; “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, page 190; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1921, pages 266 and 272.

TAURANGA HARBOUR.—DREDGED CHANNEL.

Wellington, N.Z., 19th October, 1921.

THE Tauranga Harbour Board notifies that a new channel between the lower harbour and the town wharves has been dredged and marked, and is now in use by vessels visiting the port. Buoys have been placed in the following positions:—

Eastern Side of Channel.
Black buoy No. 1, in 11 ft., M.L.W.S., Sulphur Point light beacon 230° 1,945 ft.
Black buoy No. 2, in 11½ ft., M.L.W.S., Sulphur Point light beacon 305° 1,695 ft.
Black buoy No. 3, in 12 ft., M.L.W.S., Mission Point △ 221° 2,540 ft.
Black buoy No. 4, in 12 ft., M.L.W.S., Mission Point △ 273° 1,000 ft.

Western Side of Channel.
Red buoy, in 11 ft., M.L.W.S., Sulphur Point light beacon 309° 1,500 ft.

This buoy is situated at the bend of the channel directly opposite and 200 ft. to the westward of black buoy No. 2, and between which the least depth of water is 12 ft., M.L.W.S.

The black buoys “B” and “No. 1b,” which formerly marked the western edge of the bank opposite Sulphur Point, have now been removed. Vessels using this channel may now proceed to the town wharves with a minimum depth of 12 ft., M.L.W.S.
