(2.) With the adoption of the above system, the following change in expression will also be made in compiling or revising Sailing Directions:—

In such an expression as “In approaching the entrance of the harbour the lighthouse should be kept northward” of a certain bearing, the terms “more than” or “less than” will be used in conjunction with a bearing instead of “northward,” “southward,” “eastward,” or “westward.”

The term “more than” will refer to a bearing in a clockwise direction from the stated bearing, and the term “less than” to a bearing in an anti-clockwise direction from the stated bearing—

Thus, More than 045° means a bearing of 046° or more ;
Less than 045° „ 044° or less ;
More than 001° „ 002° or more ;
Less than 001° „ 000° or 359° or less ;
More than 000° „ 001° or more ;

and finally, in the special case of “less than 000°,” the expression “less than 360°” will be adopted, meaning a bearing of 359° or less.

CENTRAL AMERICA.

CARIBBEAN COAST. — PANAMA. — POINT MANZANILLO. — CAUTION WITH REGARD TO UNEXAMINED DANGEROUS AREA NORTHWARD OF.

Details.—Shoal water with a rocky bottom is reported to exist in an area northward of Point Manzanillo, bounded as follows :—

(i.) On the north by the parallel of lat. 10° 00′ N.
(ii.) On the east by the meridian of long. 79° 30′ W.
(iii.) On the south by the parallel of lat. 9° 42′ N.
(iv.) On the west by the meridian of long. 79° 45′ W.

Caution.—Mariners are cautioned against navigating in the above area.

Note.—This area is to be enclosed on the charts by pecked lines, with the note “CAUTION.—Unexamined dangerous area within the pecked lines (1920).”

Remarks.—Further notice will be given when the above area has been examined.

Gough Island.—Amended Position.

Position.—At a distance of about 8 miles westward from position hitherto shown on Chart No. 2202A. Lat. 40° 15′ 48″ S., long. 9° 58′ 06″ W.

Details.—The above position is that of Penguin Islet, which is situated close to the north-eastern shore of Gough Island.

Remarks.—The position of Penguin Islet in the title of the plan of Gough Island on Chart No. 2228 is to be amended as above.

NORTH OF TONGA.—BOSCOWEN AND KEPPEL ISLES CHARTED IN WRONG POSITION.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the whole group of islands and reefs called Curacoa, Boscowen, and Keppel are incorrectly placed on Chart 1829, “Fiji Islands to Samoa Islands.” They should be placed six miles east (true) of charted position. They are correct as regards latitude and relative position to one another.

Position.—Centre of Keppel Island or Niuatobutabu is in lat. 15° 58′ S., long. 173° 46′ W.

Chart affected.—No. 1829, Fiji Islands to Samoa Islands.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN.

PHOENIX ISLANDS.—ENDERBURY ISLAND.—AMENDED POSITION.

Position.—At a distance of 7½ miles, 73°, from charted position. Landing-place, lat. 3° 7′ S., long. 171° 3′ W.

Remarks.—Enderbury Island, together with the soundings shown on the chart within a distance of 13 miles of it, is to be moved on the chart 7½ miles in a 73° direction.

Note.—The position of the landing given in the title of the plan of Enderbury Island on Chart No. 184 is to be amended in accordance with the above, and the note regarding the reported incorrect position of the island is to be expunged from the charts.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that a shoal with less than 3 fathoms on it is stated to exist in lat. 9° 52′ S. and long. 136° 13′ E. Shoal water apparently extends N.E. and S.W. for 4 cables.

This position should be marked on charts as “Shoal water reported P.D.”

EAST COAST.—INNER BARRIER ROUTE.—AYE (1) REEF.—BEACON DISCONTINUED.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the black square beacon on Aye (i) Reef has been destroyed. The beacon will not be re-established.

Position.—On the southern end of Aye (i) Reef. Lat. 13° 58¼′ S., long. 143° 50¼′ E., on Chart No. 2921.

INNER BARRIER ROUTE.—ELLIS ISLET.—BEACON TO BE DISCONTINUED.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the black square beacon (No. VII) on Ellis Islet will be discontinued on or about 30th April, 1921.

Position.—On the centre of Ellis Islet. Lat. 13° 22¼′ S., long. 143° 41½′ E., on Chart No. 3762.

SOUTH COAST.—SPENCER GULF.—EASTERN SHOAL LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the flashing white light on the north end of eastern shoal will be replaced by a group flashing white light (U) on or about 1st June, 1921.

Position.—On the north end of Eastern Shoal. Lat. 33° 5′ S., long. 137° 48′ E., on Chart No. 2389.

Details.—The flashing white light will be replaced by a group flashing white light having the undermentioned character :—

Character.—Group - flashing white light showing two flashes in quick succession every six seconds, thus : Flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 1 sec. ; flash ⅓ sec., eclipse 4⅓ secs.

Remarks.—The other details of the light will remain unchanged.

Note.—No further notice will be given.

SOUTH-EAST COAST.—GABO ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE.—ALTERATION IN FOG-SIGNAL.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the explosive fog-signal at the Gabo Island Lighthouse has been altered from two explosive rockets in quick succession every five minutes to one explosive rocket every five minutes.

Position.—Lat. 37° 34¼′ S., long. 149° 55¾′ E., on Chart No. 1017.

Note.—No further notice will be given.

TASMANIA.

WEST COAST.—CAPE SORELL LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the power of the alternating flashing white and red light on Cape Sorell will be increased, and the duration of the flash will be reduced to 2¼ seconds, on or about 21st June, 1921.

Position.—Lat. 42° 11′ S., long. 145° 10′ E., on Chart No. 1079.

Character.—Alternating flashing white and red light, showing one flash every twenty-two and a half seconds ; duration of flash about 2¼ seconds.

Power.—White light, 84,000 candles ; red light, 33,000 candles.

Remarks.—The other details of the light will remain unchanged.

Note.—No further notice will be given.

SOUTH COAST.—MAATSUYKER ISLES LIGHT.—INTENDED ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.

Mariners and others are hereby notified that the power of the group flashing white light on the south-west Maatsuyker Isle will be increased, and the duration of the flashes will be reduced to 2·6 seconds on or about 21st May, 1921.
