during the first year, and £100 yearly during each of the
next three years. Scheme of drainage to be on lines approved
by Chief Drainage Engineer, and the whole to be maintained
and kept open for the period of lease at the sole expense of
the lessee and to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of
Crown Lands.

Stock may be grazed for the first eight years of lease,
provided such grazing is not injurious to flax. No grazing
permitted for last two years of lease. -
No compensation to be allowed for improvements at
termination of lease; but the lessee may, provided all con-
ditions of the lease shall have been satisfactorily fulfilled,
remove any buildings or plant erected by him on the land. -
All flax growing on the ground shall revert to the
Crown at the termination of the lease without any compensa-
tion whatever, and no plants shall be removed or destroyed. -
The Crown reserves the right to make drains and roads
within any of the areas at any time, and also reserves the
right of access to property at all times. -
Lessees shall not transfer or sublet nor dispose of the
cutting or milling rights except with approval of the Land
Board, and all flax must be milled by the lessee at a mill
owned and operated by himself. -
Lease to be forfeited for non-compliance with con-
ditions. -
Highest or any tender not necessarily accepted.
Tenders to be addressed “Commissioner of Crown Lands,
Auckland,” and envelopes to be marked “Tenders for Flax
Leases.”

Discharged Soldiers.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned lands
are open for sale or lease under the Discharged Soldiers
Settlement Act, 1915, and the regulations thereunder; and
applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey
Office, Dunedin, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Monday, the 23rd
August, 1920.
The land may be purchased for cash or on deferred pay-
ments, or selected on lease for sixty-six years, with right of
renewal for further successive terms of sixty-six years and a
right to acquire the freehold.
Applicants must appear personally before the Land Board for
examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Dunedin,
on Wednesday, the 25th August, 1920, at 10 o’clock a.m.
The ballot will be held at the conclusion of the examination
of applicants.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
These sections are part of the original Galloway Station.
They are situated from two to five miles from Galloway
Railway-siding on a well-formed road. There is a school
and post-office on Galloway Flat. Each section contains a
proportion of very fair land, and varying areas in each may
be irrigated by water from the Bonanza Water-race, to which
it is possible to supply water from the Manorburn—Ida
Valley Irrigation Scheme.

DESCRIPTION.
This block lies on the south side of the Ongarue River,
about four miles and a half to seventeen miles eastward from
Waimiha Railway-station by roads which have not yet
been formed; but provision has been made for the con-
struction of necessary-formed access. There are several
horse and foot tracks which traverse different parts of the
block, and a stock-bridge has been erected over the Ongarue
River leading to the sections. The country is mostly undu-
lating to hilly and broken, and (with the exception of Sec-
tions 1, 2, and 3, Block V, Hurakia Survey District) is more
or less well watered by streams. The altitude ranges from
about 700 ft. to about 2,700 ft. above sea-level.
Sections 2 and 3, Block IX, 1, Block V, also 3 and 4,
Block VI, Ongarue Survey District, are covered with fern
and manuka scrub, the soil being pumice in nature of poor
to fair quality. The balance of the sections are either partly
or wholly covered with heavy bush, comprising chiefly tawa,
rata, totara, matai, rimu, and kahikatea, with heavy under-
growth of mahoe, makomako, konini, &c., the soil being fair
to good pumice loam resting on sandstone or rhyolite forma-
