Notice to Mariners.—No. 10 of 1920.
DREDGING OPERATIONS.—AUCKLAND HARBOUR.

NOTICE is hereby given that the Auckland Harbour Board's dredge “Hapai” is now working to the eastward of the Queen’s Wharf and northward of the Central Wharf, and has six moorings laid out in north, south, east, and west directions.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London; the Department of Trade and Customs, Melbourne; the Minister of State for Communications, Tokyo; and the Acting-Governor, Panama Canal, are published for general information.

ENGLAND.
EAST COAST.—THAMES APPROACH.—INFORMATION WITH REGARD TO BUOYAGE.
- South Outer Gabbard whistle-buoy, alteration in position :—New Position.—At a distance of about 2 miles northward from position shown on charts. Lat. 51° 56′ 2″ N., long. 2° 2′ 55″ E.Description.—A red conical whistle-buoy.
- South Galloper light-buoy withdrawn :—Position.—Lat. 51° 44½′ N., long. 1° 55¼′ E.Description.—A red can light-buoy, formerly exhibiting a flashing white light.
SOUTH-EAST COAST.—SOUTH FORELAND APPROACHES.—CAUTION WITH REGARD TO VESSELS ANCHORING.Former Notices.—Nos. 665 and 1096 of 1918 ; hereby cancelled.Position.—South Foreland, lat. 51° 8½′ N., long. 1° 22¼′ E.Caution.—Owing to the existence of submarine telephone and telegraph cables, mariners are warned not to anchor within an area bounded as follows :—(a.) On the North.—By the parallel of lat. 51° 10′ N.(b) On the East.—By the meridian of long. 1° 30′ E.(c.) On the South.—By the parallel of lat. 51° 5′ N.(d.) On the West.—By the meridian of long. 1° 20′ 40″ E.The above warning does not apply to the Examination Anchorage off South Foreland, which is situated within the foregoing area.Note.—The area defined above is to be substituted on the charts for the prohibited anchorage area off South Foreland notified in the former notices, and the following cautionary note is to be inserted : “Caution.—Vessels are warned not to anchor in the area enclosed by pecked lines.”
FRANCE.NORTH COAST.
(1.) Boulogne Approach.—Light-vessel withdrawn.Position.—Lat. 50° 45′ N., long. 1° 32½′ E.Details.—The light-vessel in the above position, formerly exhibiting a flashing red light, has been withdrawn.
(2.) Ruytingen Bank.—Light-vessel established.Position.—Lat. 51° 14′ 30″ N., long. 2° 12′ 54″ E.Characteristics of light-vessel :—(a.) Light:Abridged Description.—Lt. fl., red, ev. 20 secs., 39 ft., vis. 10 m.Description.—A flashing red light every twenty seconds, thus—flash 5 secs., eclipse 15 secs.Elevation.—39 ft.Visibility.—10 miles.Power.—2,000 candles.
(b.) Fog-signal:Description.—A siren giving three blasts every minute, thus—blast 3 secs., silent 5 secs.; blast 3 secs., silent 23 secs.; blast 3 secs., silent 23 secs.Note.—If the siren is out of order, a bell will be sounded in a similar manner.
(c.) Vessel:Description.—The vessel has one mast with red cage, and is painted in red and black bands on sides.Note.—The table of tidal streams on the charts is to be amended accordingly.
NORTH-WEST COAST.—CHENAL DU FOUR.—GRANDE VINO-TIERE ROCK.—LIGHT RE-EXHIBITED.—LIGHT-BUOY WITH-DRAWN.
(a.) Light re-exhibited:Position.—On the black tower, Grande Vinotiere Rock. Lat. 48° 22′ N., long. 4° 48½′ W.Abridged Description.—(U) Lt. F., 49 ft., vis. 10 m.Details:Character.—A fixed white light.Elevation.—49 ft.Visibility.—10 miles.Structure.—A black octagonal tower.Remarks.—The light is unwatched.
(b.) Temporary light-buoy withdrawn:Position.—Westward of Grande Vinotiere Rock. Lat. 48° 22′ N., long. 4° 48½′ W.Details.—The light-buoy in the foregoing position, painted black and formerly exhibiting a fixed white light, has been withdrawn, and is to be expunged from the charts.
CANADA.NOVA SCOTIA.—BAY OF FUNDY.—GREEN ISLAND.—FOG-SIGNAL ESTABLISHED.Position.—On west side of Green Island. Lat. 43° 41′ 13″ N., long. 66° 8′ 38″ W.Description.—An explosive fog-signal, consisting of bomb explosions every fifteen minutes, and every five minutes when vessels’ signals are heard in dangerous proximity.
UNITED STATES.ATLANTIC COAST.—MONHEGAN ISLAND LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.Position.—On Monhegan Island. Lat. 43° 46′ N., long. 69° 19′ W.New Abridged Description.—Lt. F. fl., ev. min., 178 ft., vis. 15 and 19 m.Alteration:Character.—The light has been altered from flashing white to fixed and flashing white every minute, thus—flash 5·6 secs., fixed 5·4 secs.Visibility.—Fixed light, 15 miles; flashing light, 19 miles.Power.—Fixed light, 1,400 candles; flashing light, 150,000 candles.
BUZZARDS BAY APPROACH.—HEN AND CHICKENS LIGHT-VESSEL.—WHISTLE-BUOY ESTABLISHED SOUTH-WESTWARD OF.—WHISTLE-BUOY WITHDRAWN. - Whistle-buoy established:Position.—At a distance of about 1½ miles south-west-ward from the charted position of the Hen and Chickens Light-vessel. Lat. 41° 25′ 57″ N., long. 71° 2′ 30″ W.Description.—A conical whistle-buoy, painted in black and red horizontal bands.
- Whistle-buoy withdrawn:Position.—At a distance of about 6 cables north-east-ward from the above position.Description.—A black conical whistle-buoy, numbered “la.”
CENTRAL AMERICA.PACIFIC COAST, PANAMA.—PANAMA CANAL APPROACH.—LIGHT-BUOYS MARKING DEFENSIVE SEA AREA WITHDRAWN. - Position.—At a distance of about 5 cables northward from the northern point of Taboguilla Island. Lat. 8° 49½′ N., long. 79° 30½′ W.Description.—A light-buoy, painted white, with occulting white light.
- Position.—Lat. 8° 52′ N., long. 79° 26¾′ W.Description.—A light-buoy, painted white, with occulting white light.
- Position.—Lat. 8° 55½′ N., long. 79° 29¼′ W.Description.—A light-buoy, painted white, with occulting white light.
Remarks.—The above light-buoys have been withdrawn.
THE PANAMA CANAL.—U.S. NAVAL RADIO STATION PUERTO OBALDIA IN OPERATION. - The U.S. Naval Radio Station Puerto Obaldia, located at Puerto Obaldia, on the Atlantic Coast of the Republic of Panama, two miles from the Colombian border (latitude 8° 50′ north, longitude 77° 40′ west), is now in operation. The station call is NRK.
