Notice to Mariners.—No. 93 of 1919.

USE OF MINE PROTECTION GEAR.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 23rd December, 1919.

ADVERTING to Notice to Mariners No. 82 issued by this Department on the 4th ultimo and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 6th ultimo, the following additional notice issued by the Admiralty is published for general information.

W. H. HERRIES,
Minister of Marine.

CIRCULAR TO SHIPOWNERS AND MASTERS OF THE BRITISH MERCANTILE MARINE.

ADMIRALTY circular letter, dated 1st August, 1919, embodying the latest orders governing the use of “Otter” mine protection gear, enables all vessels other than passenger vessels, excepting those trading in the Baltic and Black Seas, now or in the future, to dispense with the use of “Otter” gear, and also exempts a very large number of passenger vessels.

  1. In order to reduce unnecessary expense, orders have been given that no further repairs to this gear are to be executed unless there is any reason to suppose that the vessel will traverse any of the prescribed areas before returning to British waters.

  2. In these circumstances it is not considered necessary that the upkeep of the gear should continue to be so sedulously maintained as has been required in the past, except in those vessels which are still required to use it. It is therefore notified for information that the payment of the allowance of £1 per month for upkeep will cease as from 1st October, 1919, except in the case of the vessels still required to use Otters; and orders have been issued that no certificates are to be signed for the upkeep of the gear after this date, except in the case of these vessels. Certificates will, however, continue to be given for any periods prior to the 1st October where the allowance has been earned.

Director of Trade Division.
