subject, however, to the closing at not later than 1 p.m. for
the statutory half-holiday, there shall be no fixed closing-
hour; (5) should the occupier of any shop affected by this
requisition observe, pursuant to section 18 (b) of the Shops
and Offices Act, 1908, Friday as the statutory closing-day
in any week, then and in such case the closing-hour on Thurs-
day for any such shop in that week shall be 9 p.m. :

And whereas the Dunedin City Council has certified that
the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of
the occupiers of all the tobacconists’ shops within the City
of Dunedin :

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister
of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices
Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 7th day of
August, 1919, all the tobacconists’ shops in the City of Dunedin
shall be closed accordingly.

All existing notices fixing closing-hours of tobacconists’
shops in the City of Dunedin are hereby cancelled, in so far
as they relate to the closing-hours of tobacconists’ shops, as
from the date of coming into operation of this notice.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Hairdressers’ and Tobacconists’
Shops in the Borough of Newmarket, under the Shops and
Offices Act, 1908.


WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority
of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades
of (1) hairdresser and (2) tobacconist in the Borough of
Newmarket, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all
such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of
working-days as follows: Subject to the closing at not later
than 1 p.m. on the day observed as the statutory closing-
day, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
at 6:30 p.m., on Fridays at 8 p.m., and on Saturdays at
9 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) the working-day
immediately preceding Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter
Monday, Labour Day, the birthday of the reigning Sovereign,
and any day which, pursuant to Proclamation by the Go-
vernor or declaration by the Government, or on the request
of the Mayor or Chairman of the local authority, is generally
observed as a public holiday, when the closing-hour shall be
8 p.m. ; (2) the working-day immediately preceding Christmas
Day and the working-day immediately preceding New Year’s
Day, when the closing-hour shall be 10 p.m. ; (3) should the
occupier of any shop affected by this requisition observe
Saturday as the statutory closing-day in any week, then and
in such case the closing-hour on Friday for any such shop
in that week shall be 9 p.m. and on Thursday shall be 8 p.m. ;
(4) should the occupier of any shop affected by this requisition
observe, pursuant to section 18 (b) of the Shops and Offices
Act, 1908, Friday as the statutory closing-day in any week,
then and in such case the closing-hour on Thursday for any
such shop in that week shall be 8 p.m. :

And whereas the Newmarket Borough Council has certified
that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority
of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades of
(1) hairdresser and (2) tobacconist within the Borough of
Newmarket :

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister
of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices
Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 7th day of
August, 1919, all the shops in each of the trades of (1) hair-
dresser and (2) tobacconist in the Borough of Newmarket
shall be closed accordingly.

War Regulations Act, 1914.—Appointment of Military
Authorities.

I, JAMES ALLEN, Minister of Defence for the Dominion
of New Zealand, in pursuance of the authority con-
ferred upon me by the Order in Council made on the 10th
day of November, 1914, and published in the New Zealand
Gazette on the same day, do hereby appoint the following
military officers as Military Authorities for the purpose of
the regulations made by the said Order in Council ; and I
declare that each of the Military Authorities so appointed
shall exercise jurisdiction and authority as such throughout
New Zealand :—

to be noxious weeds within the meaning of the Noxious
Weeds Act, 1908, in the district under its jurisdiction.
