SUMMARY FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH, 1919.

Fine, warm days ruled during March, but the nights were often cold, particularly in the beginning and towards the close of the month, when anticyclonic pressures were in evidence. Rainfall was again much below the mean of previous years over the whole Dominion, and on this account vegetable growth was very backward, especially in the East Coast districts.

The two chief disturbances were of the westerly type, and they were effective between the 14th and 18th and the 20th and 26th respectively. Somewhat squally conditions were experienced in various parts of the country during these two periods, and on the 16th a severe south-west gale raged in Canterbury, and was responsible for a considerable amount of damage to trees, crops, &c.
