WHEREAS by section 17 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, it is enacted that the result of every poll taken in any separate or combined district under the authority of that section shall be notified to the Minister of Labour in the manner therein provided, and the Minister shall thereupon appoint the day determined by the result of such poll as the statutory closing-day for that district:
And whereas the Town Clerk of the Borough of Timaru has notified to me that the result of the poll taken in the separate district of the Borough of Timaru is in favour of Thursday as the statutory closing-day in that separate district:

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Booksellers', Stationers', and Fancy-goods Shops in the Borough of New Plymouth, under the Shops and Offices Act, 1908.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades of (1) bookseller, (2) stationer, and (3) fancy-goods dealer in the Borough of New Plymouth, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops in the borough shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 5.30 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9.30 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) the period of six working-days immediately prior to the 24th of December in each year, when the closing-time shall be optional; (2) any occupier who observes Saturday as the statutory half-holiday shall be entitled to keep his or her shop open on the Thursday till 5.30 p.m., and on Friday till 9.30 p.m.; (3) should any day other than Thursday be observed as a holiday, the closing-hour for Thursday shall be 5.30 p.m.; (4) should any Saturday be generally observed as a holiday, the closing-hour on the previous Friday shall be 9.30 p.m.; (5) should Easter Saturday be generally observed as a holiday, the closing-hour for the preceding Thursday shall be 9.30 p.m.:
And whereas the New Plymouth Borough Council has certified that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the shops in each of the trades of (1) bookseller, (2) stationer, and (3) fancy-goods dealer within the Borough of New Plymouth:
Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 28th day of May, 1919, all the shops in each of the trades of (1) bookseller, (2) stationer, and (3) fancy-goods dealer in the Borough of New Plymouth shall be closed as follows: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 5.30 p.m., and on Saturdays at 9.30 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) the seven working-days immediately preceding Christmas Day and the working-day immediately preceding New Year's Day, when there shall be no fixed closing-hour; (2) should the occupier of any shop affected by this requisition observe, pursuant to section 11 (2) of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, Saturday as the statutory closing-day, then and in such case the closing-hour on Thursday for any such shop shall be 5.30 p.m. and on Friday shall be 9.30 p.m.; (3) should the occupier of any shop affected by this requisition observe, pursuant to section 19 of the above-mentioned Act, any of the special days therein mentioned, other than Thursday, as the statutory closing-day in any week, then and in such case the closing-hour on Thursday for any such shop in that week shall be 5.30 p.m., and should such special day fall on Saturday the closing-hour on Friday for any such shop in that week shall be 9.30 p.m.; (4) should Easter Saturday be generally observed as a holiday in the borough, the closing-hour on Thursday in that week shall be 9.30 p.m.
The notice gazetted on the 26th day of July, 1917, is hereby cancelled.

Result of Poll upon Proposal to raise a Loan.
PURSUANT to section 12 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1913, I hereby give notice that at a poll of ratepayers of the Borough of Hamilton taken on the 23rd day of April, 1919, on the proposal of the Hamilton Borough Council to borrow the sum of £20,000 for the following purpose—for the erection of workers’ dwellings under the provisions of section 325 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1908, and sections 52 and 53 of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1913—the number of votes recorded for the proposal was 135, and the number of votes recorded against the proposal was 206; informal, 4. Total number of voters, 345.
I therefore declare that the proposal was lost.
