Notice to Mariners.—No. 13 of 1919.

KAWHIA HARBOUR.

Wellington, N.Z., 28th March, 1919.

THE Kawhia County Council have notified that Captain Pierotti, of the s.s. “Rimu,” reports that the depth of water on Kawhia Bar has decreased, and recent soundings show a depth of 12 ft. M.L.W.S. for a distance of about 2½ chains north and south of the beacons in line.

Charts, &c., affected.—Admiralty Charts Nos. 2524 and 2535; “New Zealand Pilot,” eighth edition, 1908, Chapter vii, page 223; “New Zealand Nautical Almanac,” 1919, page 462.

THE following Notices to Mariners, which have been received from the Hydrographic Office, London, are published for general information.

AUSTRALIA.

TORRES STRAIT APPROACH.—MERKARA SHOAL.—LIGHT-VESSEL ESTABLISHED SOUTH-WESTWARD OF.

Position.—At a distance of 20 miles, 240° (S. 55° W. mag.), from Merkara Shoal. Lat. 10° 40′ S., long. 140° 55′ E.

Characteristics :

(a.) Light :

Abridged Description.—Lt. gp. fl. (3), ev. 15 secs., 32 ft., vis. 10 m. (U).

Character.—A group flashing white light showing three flashes every fifteen seconds, thus—flash ½ sec., eclipse 1½ secs.; flash, ½ sec., eclipse 1½ secs.; flash ½ sec., eclipse 10½ secs.

Elevation.—32 ft.

Visibility.—10 miles.

Power.—1,500 candles.

Remarks.—The light is unwatched.

(b.) Fog-signal :

Description.—A bell sounded by the motion of the vessel.

Description.—The vessel has one mast carrying the lantern, the hull is painted red and marked “CARPENTARIA” in white on the sides.

Variation.—5° E.

MEDITERRANEAN.

ITALY.—LEGHORN ROADSTEAD.—VEGLIAIA MOLE.—WRECK-MARKING BUOY ESTABLISHED SOUTH-WESTWARD OF.

Position.—At a distance of about 9 cables south-westward from Vegliaia Mole. Lat. 43° 31′ 21″ N., long. 10° 16′ 53″ E., on Chart No. 2554.

Description.—A green buoy, with spherical topmark, marked with the letter “A” in white.

Remarks.—The above buoy has been established to mark a sunken wreck, and a note “Wreck (1918)” is to be inserted on the charts against this buoy.

PORT SAID APPROACH.—LIGHT-BUOY ESTABLISHED.

Position.—Lat. 31° 19′ 15″ N., long. 32° 22′ 15″ E.

Description.—A light-buoy exhibiting an occulting red light every five seconds.

Remarks.—This light-buoy has been established to mark the wrecks shown on the charts in the above vicinity; vessels must pass to the westward of the light-buoy.


Special Books in Languages and Literature for the Teachers’ Class C Certificate Examination, 1920 and 1921.

IN pursuance of regulations under the Education Act, 1914, notice is hereby given that at the Teachers’ Class C Certificate Examination of January, 1920, and January, 1921, respectively, the special books of which a knowledge will be required will be as follows :—

(a.) January, 1920.

ENGLISH.—Shakespeare, “Merchant of Venice,” “Julius Caesar”; Gray, “Poems”; Goldsmith, “Deserted Village”; Johnson, “Life of Swift”; Landor, “Pericles and Aspasia.” In addition, a knowledge of the period of literature 1744 to 1798 will be required. Special attention must be paid to Johnson, Burke, Gibbon, Goldsmith, Collins, Gray, Crabbe, Burns, and Cowper; but the other authors in the period are not to be neglected. The literary movements and their leaders, the current types and forms of literature and their representatives, as well as the influence of the ancient classics, and of the leading Continental literatures on the English literature of the period, must also be examined.

LATIN.—Sallust, “Catiline; Virgil, “Aeneid IX.”

GERMAN.—Goethe, “Faust” (Part I); Lessing, “Minna von Barnhelm”; Sudermann, “Frau Sorge.”

ITALIAN.—Fogazzaro, “Il Santo”; Amicis, “Carrozza di Tutti.”

SPANISH.—Galdos, “Trafalgar” (Pitt Press); Quintana, “Vidas de Españoles Celebres,” Volume I—Lives of Vasco Nunez de Balboa and Francisco Pizarro.

(b.) January, 1921.

ENGLISH.—Wordsworth, edited by Matthew Arnold (“Golden Treasury Series”); Shelley, “Adonais”; Lamb, “Essays of Elia” (First Series); Thackeray, “Esmond.” In addition, a knowledge of the period of literature 1798 to 1840 will be required. Special attention must be paid to Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Keats, Skelley, Scott, Lamb, Macaulay, and Carlyle; but the other authors in the period are not to be neglected. The literary movements and their leaders, the current types and forms of literature and their representatives, as well as the influence of the ancient classics and of the leading Continental literatures on the English literature of the period, must also be examined.
