I T is hereby notified that the undermentioned persons have
been appointed to be the Deputies of the Registrars of
Marriages and of Births and Deaths for the districts set
respectively opposite their names, viz. :—

Appointments and Grant of Temporary Ranks to Officers of the N.Z. Staff Corps, N.Z. Permanent Staff, and Territorial Force.

Wellington, 11th February, 1919.

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased
to approve of the appointments and grant of temporary
ranks to the undermentioned officers of the N.Z. Staff Corps,
N.Z. Permanent Staff, and Territorial Force.

Major (temp. Lieutenant-Colonel) Murray Menzies Gard'ner,
D.S.O., p.s.c. q., Royal N.Z. Artillery, is temporarily
appointed Director of Artillery (Field). Dated 1st January, 1919.

Captain (temp. Lieutenant-Colonel) Alexander Fowler Roberts,
O.B.E., N.Z. Field Artillery, relinquishes the appointment
of Director of Artillery (Field). Dated 31st December, 1918.

Major Charles Eric Andrews, N.Z. Staff Corps, Assistant
Adjutant-General, is temporarily authorized to exercise
the powers of Adjutant-General in the absence of Colonel
Robert Ward Tate, C.B.E., on duty in Samoa. Dated 10th January, 1919.

Hon. Captain and Quartermaster (temp.) George Albert Gibbs
(R.A.M.C.), attached N.Z. Staff Corps, is granted the
temporary rank of Major whilst holding the appointment
of Deputy Assistant Director of Medical Services. Dated 1st December, 1918.

Hon. Lieutenant (temp.) Ernest James Browning, N.Z.
Permanent Staff, is granted the temporary rank of Captain
whilst holding the appointment of Assistant Adjutant-
General, Auckland Military District. Dated 1st April, 1918.

Lieutenant (temp.) John Edward Packman, N.Z. Permanent
Staff, is granted the temporary rank of Captain whilst
holding the appointment of A.D.S. and T., Wellington
Military District. Dated 1st April, 1918.

Lieutenant (temp.) Henry William Johnson, U.L. (b), General
List, is granted the temporary rank of Captain whilst
employed as Sanitary Inspector, Featherston Camp.
Dated 1st December, 1918.

Lieutenant (temp.) Henry William Johnson, U.L. (b), General
List, relinquished his appointment as Sanitary Inspector,
Featherston Camp, on 13th January, 1919, and is attached
to the branch of the A.D.M.S. (San.), General Headquarters,
retaining the temporary rank of Captain whilst so employed.

2nd Lieutenant John Spearman D'Hauteville Birkby,
N.Z.R.B., Territorial Unit, was appointed Adjutant,
Narrow Neck (Cam), on the 16th September, 1918, and is
granted the temporary rank of Lieutenant whilst so
employed. Dated 16th September, 1918.

Lieutenant Ernest John Brammall, U.L. (b), was appointed
Officer in Charge, Sick and Wounded Records, Canterbury
Military District, on 4th May, 1918, and is granted the
temporary rank of Captain whilst so employed. Dated
1st December, 1918.

Lieutenant (temp.) Claude Charles Brinsley, U.L. (b), General
List, is granted the temporary rank of Captain whilst
holding the appointment of Officer in Charge, Sick and
Wounded Records, Wellington Military District. Dated
1st December, 1918.

Hon. Lieutenant (temp.) Joseph Hadfield Westley Sheppard,
U.L. (b), General List (attached N.Z.A.P.D.), is granted the
honorary rank of Captain temporarily whilst employed. in
the War Expenses Branch, General Headquarters. Dated
lst January, 1919.

2nd Lieutenant (temp.) Robert Norbury, U.L. (b), General
List, is granted the temporary rank of Lieutenant whilst
holding the appointment of Electrician in Charge in the
branch of the Director of Railways and Works. Dated 1st
January, 1919.

N.Z. MEDICAL CORPS.

Captain (temp.) Ernest Harry Williams, M.B., was appointed
a member of a Special District Medical Board. Dated 21st
May, 1918.

Fixing Dates on which certain Returns under the Fire Brigades Act, 1908, are to be furnished.

Department of Internal Affairs,
Wellington, 4th February, 1919.

PURSUANT to section 22 of the Fire Brigades Act, 1908,
it is hereby notified that the returns showing the
total gross amount of the premiums received by or due to
fire-insurance companies during the year ended 31st December, 1918, shall be transmitted to the Fire Boards concerned,
in the manner prescribed by the said section, on or before
the 31st May, 1919.

Notice fixing the Closing-hours of Grocers’ Shops in the Borough of Napier, under the Shops and Offices Act, 1908.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority
of the occupiers of all the grocers' shops in the Borough
of Napier, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such
shops be closed in the evening of working-days as follows:
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays
at 6 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) the Saturday
following Good Friday and the Saturdays in the period from
the 15th day of December to the 8th day of January (both
days inclusive), when the closing-hour shall be 9 p.m.; (2) the
working-day immediately preceding Christmas Day and the
working-day immediately preceding New Year’s Day, when
there shall be no fixed closing-hour; (3) should the occupier
of any shop affected by this requisition observe, pursuant to
section 19 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, any of the
special days therein mentioned other than Wednesday as the
statutory closing-day in any week, then and in such case the
closing-hour on Wednesday for any such shop in that week
shall be 6 p.m.; (4) should the occupier of any shop affected
by this requisition observe, pursuant to section 11 (2) of the
Shops and Offices Act, 1908, Saturday as the statutory closing-
day, then and in such case the closing-hour on Wednesday
for any such shop shall be 6 p.m.:

And whereas the Napier Borough Council has certified that
the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the
occupiers of all the grocers' shops within the Borough of
Napier:

Now, therefore, I, William Herbert Herries, Acting Minister
of Labour, in pursuance of section 25 of the Shops and Offices
Act, 1908, do hereby direct that on and after the 20th day of
February, 1919, all the grocers' shops in the Borough of
Napier shall be closed accordingly.

Dated at Wellington this 13th day of February, 1919.

such shop shall be 7 p.m. and on Friday shall be 9 p.m.;
(3) should the occupier of any shop affected by this requisition
observe, pursuant to section 19 of the Shops and Offices Act,
1908, any of the special days therein mentioned other than
