Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 25th September, 1919.
NOTICE is hereby given that on and after 1st November, 1919, the “British Signal Manual,” which has hitherto been used in the examination of masters and mates in connection with the Morse and semaphore signals will be abandoned, and the “Allied Signal Manual” will be substituted for use in the examination. Copies of the book will be supplied to the navigation schools and the Merchant Service Guild. All ships leaving England are now supplied with copies of the “Allied Signal Manual,” and the book (together with an addendum) may be purchased at the price of 1s. 6d., exclusive of cost of postage, either directly or through the bookseller, from His Majesty’s Stationery Offices in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin.

Notice to Mariners.—No. 69 of 1919.
MINE WARNING.—BASS STRAIT AND NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 30th September, 1919.
THE Admiralty have notified that the mine-sweepers have completed the sweeping of the Bass Strait mine-field, and the area is now considered clear. Mariners, however, should keep a sharp lookout for drifting mines, as all of those laid have not yet been accounted for.
With reference to Notice to Mariners No. 64 of 1919, the Commonwealth Naval Board recommends that, owing to the possibility of some of the mines having dragged their moorings in unknown directions, ships should give the mine-field a wide berth by passing twenty miles off Cape Everard for a year from the present date.
GEORGE ALLPORT,
Secretary.
Notice to Mariners.—No. 70 of 1919.
