Appointment of Examining-place.

IN exercise of the powers in me for this purpose vested by the Customs Act, 1913, I, Arthur Mielziner Myers, Minister of Customs, do by this warrant appoint that on and from the date hereof the shed known as “F” Shed, built of brick and concrete and roofed with iron, and situated on the Jull Wharf, part of the Breastwork Wharf, abutting on Iron Pot Quay, at the Port of Napier, shall be a place for the examination of goods subject to the control of the Customs at that port.

Now, I, Josiah Alfred Hanan, Minister of Education, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 of the Industrial Schools Act, 1908, do hereby direct the Public Trustee to take possession of all such moneys and apply the same for the benefit of such inmate in accordance with the provisions of the last-mentioned Act.

WEST COAST.—ST. IVES BAY APPROACH.—EXISTENCE OF WRECK.

Position (approximate).—At a distance of about 3 miles westward of Godrevy Island Lighthouse. Lat. 50° 14′ 13″ N., long. 5° 28′ 40″ W.

Description.—A sunken wreck with mast showing above water.

PANAMA.

PANAMA BAY.—PERLAS ISLANDS.—SAN JOSÉ ISLAND.—LIGHT ESTABLISHED.

About 26th September, 1918, an unwatched flashing white acetylene light of 1,000 candle-power, showing 1 flash every 12 seconds—thus, flash 5 seconds, eclipse 7 seconds—will be established on the south-western extremity of San José Island.

The light will be exhibited 126 ft. above high water from a pyramidal skeleton steel tower 15 ft. high, painted white, and will be visible 18 miles.

The light will illuminate an arc of 294° from 40° 30′ to 334° 30′.

Approximate position: 8° 12′ 3″ N., 79° 7′ 45″ W.

CANADA.

NOVA SCOTIA, SOUTH-WEST COAST.—SEAL ISLAND.—ALTERATION IN FOG-SIGNAL.

Position.—At southern end of Seal Island. Lat. 43° 23½′ N., long. 66° 1′ W.

Alteration.—The whistle has been replaced by a horn, operated by compressed air, giving two blasts every minute, thus—

WEST COAST.—CAPE ST. MARY LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER.

Position.—Lat. 44° 5¼′ N., long. 66° 12¾′ W.

New Abridged Description.—Lt. F. Gp. Fl. (2), ev. 24 sec., 103 ft., vis. 16 m.

Details.—The alternating red and white light has been replaced by a fixed and group flashing white light showing two flashes every twenty-four seconds, thus—

6 secs. 18 secs.

Elevation.—Unaltered.

Visibility.—Unaltered.

Power.—Fixed light, 500 candles; flashes 50,000 candles.

Remarks.—For half the period of the light—viz., for twelve seconds—a fixed light will be visible through which the flashes will show; for the other half of the period the light will be totally eclipsed.

BAY OF FUNDY.—LURCHER SHOAL LIGHT-VESSEL.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTER OF LIGHT.

Position.—Lat. 43° 48½′ N., long. 66° 32′ W.

New Abridged Description of Light.—2 Hor. Lts. F., 60 ft., vis. 12 m.

Alteration.—The character of the light exhibited at each masthead has been altered from occulting white to fixed white.

CAPE BRETON ISLAND, EAST COAST.—INGONISH ISLAND LIGHT.—ALTERATION IN CHARACTERISTICS.

Position.—Lat. 46° 41¼′ N., long. 60° 20¼′ W.

New Abridged Description.—Lt. F. Gp. Fl. (3), ev. 24 sec., 237 ft., vis. 20 m.

Details.—The fixed white light has been replaced by a fixed and group flashing white light showing three flashes every twenty-four seconds, thus—

Elevation.—Unaltered.

Visibility.—Unaltered.

Power.—Fixed light, 500 candles; flashes 40,000 candles.

AUSTRALIA.

NEW SOUTH WALES.—SPLIT SOLITARY ISLAND.—REEF NORTH-WESTWARD OF.

Position.—Split Solitary Island, lat. 30° 14′ S., long. 153° 11′ E.

Details.—The northern end of the reef is situated at a distance of 9 cables, 328° (N. 42° W. mag.), from the south-western extremity of Split Solitary Island, with a depth of 5 fathoms.

The southern end of the reef is situated at a distance of 8 cables, 325° (N. 45° W. mag.), from the south-western extremity of the same island, with a depth of 3¾ fathoms.

Remarks.—The reef is about 1¼ cables in width.

Variation.—10° E.

JAPAN.

SHIMONOSEKI STRAIT.—NEW LIGHT SHOWN AND TEMPORARY LIGHT WITHDRAWN.

Notice is hereby given that the light on the following new lighthouse recently established at Yamazokonohana, western entrance to Shimonoseki Strait, has been shown since the 22nd September, 1918, and at the same time the Yamazokonohana temporary lighthouse was withdrawn.

Yamazokonohana Lighthouse.

Position.—Lat. 33° 54′ 57″ N., long. 130° 55′ 13″ E. (according to the Japanese Admiralty Chart No. 135).

Description.—Lower part circular stone, middle part iron cylinder, upper part iron lattice work, painted black.

Height of Light.—36 shaku above the base and 35 shaku above the water.

Character of Light.—Pintsch’s gas occulting white, light 4 seconds, eclipse 2 seconds.

Illuminated Arc.—An arc of 244°, from S. 14° W., through W. & N. to N. 78° E. (magnetic bearings taken from seaward).

Power.—200 candles.

Distance Visible.—11 nautical miles in clear night.

Note.—The light being unwatched, should it go out by accident there may be some delay in relighting it.
